As a show of appreciation, a “Thank You” cake was delivered to the Florence Police Department by Coast Jewler
owner Liz Breon last week. “As I enter my 10th year of business in Florence, I look at all the blessings of liv-
ing here. For a single business woman, feeling safe ranks way up there,” said Breon. “Many of the officers wave
as they drive by on Bay Street, and the code enforcement officer has been very professional and always kind.
As the world seems to spin into craziness, Florence is a great place to be. Again, a special thanks to our fine
police department.” From left are: Local baker Kay Robertson, Police Chief Turner, Officer Merriweather, Liz

Mayor proclaims Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
At the Aug. 15 Florence
City Council meeting, Mayor
Joe
Henry
proclaimed
September as Prostate Cancer
Awareness Month in the City
of Florence.
In presenting the proclama-
tion to Us TOO Florence
facilitator Bob Horney, Henry
shared the following informa-
tion:
• Prostate cancer is the most
commonly diagnosed non-
skin cancer in men and the
second leading cause of can-
cer death in men. In 2016,
approximately 180,890 men
in the United States will be
diagnosed with prostate can-
cer (2,490 in Oregon) and
about 26,120 men will lose
their lives to this disease (410
in Oregon).
• Men will seldom experi-
ence any symptoms when
diagnosed at the most curable
stage. Five-year survival rates
are nearly 100 percent when
diagnosed with localized or
regional disease, but it drops
to only 28 percent among men
diagnosed with metastatic dis-
ease.
