Robert’s Rules of Order
workshop to be held at FEC
Want to attend more pro-
ductive and efficient meet-
ings? Unsure of when to make
a motion for new business or
call for the order of the day?
Then attend the Robert’s
Rules of Order In-Brief
Workshop on Thursday, Sept.
8, from 9 a.m. to noon at the
Florence Events Center.
Dr. Russ Pierson of Lane
Community College has
designed this workshop for
new board members, long-
time members and anyone that
is part of an organization or
committee that holds regular
meetings.
The goal of Robert’s Rules
of Order is to provide common
rules and procedures for delib-
eration and debate in order to
place the whole membership
on the same footing and speak-
ing the same language.
Tickets are available at the
Florence Events Center by
calling 541-997-1994.
The workshop is $10 and
comes with a book for person-
al use. Refreshments will also

St. Mary’s Men’s Club donates to youth program
On Wednesday, Aug. 17,
Dan Gilday and Jim Perry of
the St. Mary’s Church Men’s
Group presented a check for
$500 to Chuck Trent, executive
director, and Michael Pearson,
vice-president of the board of
the Boys and Girls Club of
Western Lane County.
The donation will be used to
expand the Financial Literacy
Program, Managing Money,
bringing teens financial educa-
tion to help them get on the
path toward budgeting, saving,
planning for college, living
within your means and finan-
cial freedom.
Giving teens the know-how
to make great financial deci-
sions throughout their life is
just one of the life skills that
teens learn at the Boys and
Girls Club.
St. Mary’s Church Men’s
Club makes annual donations
to local nonprofit organizations
with funds earned from events
put on at the church throughout
the year.

Next FloTones concert to be ‘south of the border’
Since the FloTones first
organized 15 years ago, the last
12 as an independent nonprofit
organization, it has entertained
Florence audiences with a num-
ber of performances, primarily
presenting music from “The
Great American Songbook.”
This includes music by such
composers as Irving Berlin,
Cole Porter and the Gershwins.
In a change of pace, the
Florence jazz vocal group will
tackle tunes from south of the
border in “The FloTones and
Friends
present
Latin
Rhythms,” to be performed in
September at the Florence
Events Center with an encore
performance at the newly
opened Class Act Theatre.
But, true to its roots, the
group will throw in a couple of
Latin-tinged songs by Porter
and Gershwin.
Several rhythmic styles will
be featured, including the bossa
nova, the mambo, the samba
and the beguine. The Brazilian
bossa nova evolved from the
earlier samba and attained
prominence in the melodies of
Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Among his tunes to be per-
formed are “Desafinado” and
“Wave.” About the same time,
the mambo became all the rage.

11 and at the Class Act Theatre Sept. 16 and 17.
The program will include
“Mambo Italiano” popularized
by

Rosemary
Clooney.
Other composers featured
include Henry Mancini’s “It
Had Better Be Tonight” from
the movie “The Pink Panther”
and Burt Bacharach’s “The
Look of Love” from the James
Bond film “Casino Royale.”
FloTones “Friends” joining
the evening will include the
musical accompaniment team
of Jennifer Weier on keyboard,
Ron Green on trumpet, Nate
Kaplan on drums and Lynette
Kristine on bass.
Performances on the FEC
flat floor will be Saturday, Sept.
10, at 7 p.m., followed by
another on Sunday, Sept. 11, at
3 p.m.
The following weekend,
FloTones and Friends will
appear at the Class Act
Theatere(CAT) on Friday and
