Bring a side dish, such as an appetizer, salad, cookies or soft drinks, and join in a com- munity farewell to Siuslaw’s legendary football coach. Come share your memories and appreciation. The afterglow will take place at the Florence Elks Lodge, 1686 12th St., from 2 to 5 p.m. No alcoholic beverages can be brought, but a no-host bar will be available. NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS New Siuslaw volleyball coach Jon Hornung gathers his players at the end of practice. Hornung is planning to use the team’s combination of speed, aggressiveness and height to reach the next level in the Far West League and beyond this season. Volleyball from 1B program, with some of the team’s top players also sitting in his chemistry class. That vantage, coupled with the team’s development over the last two years under coach Angie Herring, has poised Hornung into what he feels is an enviable posi- tion as coach. “I saw the dedication they had, and am benefitting from it now as their coach,” says Hornung. Fishing from 1B fish small and simple as the river conditions are low and clear. For cutthroat trout, cast- ing small spinners, spoons or fly fishing streamers or dry flies can be very effective. WILSON RIVER: Steelhead, Chinook, cutthroat Fishing for steelhead and spring Chinook is slow. The water is low and clear, so use lighter gear and target the deeper holding areas. Trout angling should be fair. YAQUINA RIVER: Cutthroat For cutthroat trout casting small spinners, spoons or fly fishing streamers or dry flies can be very effective. Angling for all species in streams above tidewater is restricted to artificial flies and lures until Sept. 1. COOS COUNTY LAKES AND PONDS: Trout, warmwater fish There are trout available for kids in the Millicoma Pond at the Millicoma Interpretive Center and fishing is excel- lent. Millicoma Pond is set aside for kids fishing only and is a great chance for them to hook into fish. Call before traveling to Millicoma Pond to make sure the gates are open. The phone number is 541-267- 2557. Fishing for largemouth bass is best in mornings and late evenings. Bass will be found in a little deeper water associ- ated with cover, like weedlines or other structure. Bluegill fishing is picking up with many fish found in or near shallow water. Plastic worms, shallow crankbaits, topwater lures, and spinner baits are good to use for bass. Bluegills will bite on worms, small jigs, or flies. The Vikings will have a solid front line with four players tow- ering at six feet, including Far West League first team all-lea- guers senior Elyssa Rose and sophomore Makenzie York as middle blockers, and sophomore Emma Collins, who was all- league honorable mention as an outside hitter last season as a freshman. Though the Vikings have lost four-year starting setter Hannah Bartlett, seniors Abby Watkins and Brittany Long will step into the position, with junior Maci Wells taking over at libero for Ali Scheer, who graduated. The Viks will also see the return of seniors Claire Waggoner and HannahLeah Jakobsen and sophomore Samantha Scheer. “Coach Hornung is really pushing us to be more aggressive and faster,” says Brittany Long. “It took us a little while to get into that pace but it’s something we’re adapting to — and we like it.” Hornung says he’ll be playing a very fast offense with quick sets that will allow strong, hard-hit- ting players like Rose and York to attack more quickly off of one- sets or quick middle sets. “Our goal is to continue to ele- vate ourselves and the game,” says Hornung. “Everyone is real- ly stepping up.” Siuslaw opens the season Thursday, Sept. 1, at Philomath, beginning at 4 p.m. month. Anglers are catching bass near structure or on the deep end of the weed lines using spinner baits, jigs, or rubber worms. Top water lures have been effective in the early mornings or evenings. Fishing for yellow perch has been slow in Tenmile Lakes. Anglers fishing along the edge of the weedlines are having the best success. Worms fished near the lake bottom work very well for catching yellow perch. The water level in the lakes is very low so boat anglers should use caution. for lingcod (2). Anglers can only keep three blue rockfish and one canary rockfish as part of their daily limit and there will be no harvest of China, quillback, or copper rockfish. Retention of one cabezon per day is allowed. Crabbing has been decent for those crabbing from a boat with the best crabbing near high tide. There has been a mixture of hard shell and soft shell crab in the catch. It is still recommended you discard the crab viscera (guts/butter) before cooking. Recreational harvest of bay clams remains open along the entire Oregon coast. Clamming is excellent during low tides near Charleston, off Cape Arago Highway, and Clam Island. There are also good places to dig clams even on positive low tides in Coos Bay. NOTE: Recreational harvest of razor clams is closed from the north jetty of the Siuslaw River south to the California border due to elevated levels of domoic acid. This includes all beaches and all bays. Before any shellfish harvest trip, make sure to check the Oregon Department of Agriculture website for any updates. COOS RIVER BASIN: Dungeness crab, bay clams, rockfish Angling is restricted to arti- ficial flies and lures in streams above tidewater. Anglers have been catching a few rockfish along the jetties and submerged rock piles. The marine fish daily bag limit for bottom fish (rockfish) is seven fish and a separate daily limit We invite you to join us. •Wednesday, 7 p.m. - Family Connections •Sunday, 9:00 a.m. - Bible Study •Sunday, 10:30 a.m. - Worship Service Corner of 10th & Maple St. • 541-997-3533 www.florencecrossroad.org email: office@florencecrossroad.org Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home WINCHESTER BAY: Bottomfish, perch Fishing for bottom fish in the Triangle and South jetty has been successful.
