coach
Rachelle
Krause-Campbell
has
announced that the middle
school cross country season
will begin soon.
“A fun-loving, friendly
group of boys and girls have
already committed to either
returning or being on the
team,” said Krause-Campbell,
“and we welcome the addition
of more.”
Siuslaw Middle School cross
country is open to all sixth
through eighth graders, includ-
ing home school students. This
running sport competes mostly
in state parks in various loca-
tions, with a focus on natural
surfaces and trails.
“The goal of our team is to
make individual improvements
while mixing in some fun,”
Krause-Campbell said.
Practices are a mix of run-
ning form practice, core
strengthening, running games
and endurance training.
The season runs from late
August through late October.
Required practices will begin
Monday, Aug. 29, and a sched-
ule will be set soon. Each stu-
dent must have the following
completed at the middle school
to be able to participate in those
practices:

No wild Coho season in bays, estuaries this fall
SALEM — As a precaution-
ary measure, ODFW has not
proposed any coastal freshwa-
ter fisheries on wild Coho this
fall due to concerns over poor
ocean survival and adequate
spawning escapement to
coastal rivers this year.
The Fish and Wildlife
Commission was scheduled to
consider a limited fishery in
the Coos, Coquille and
Umpqua rivers and Tenmile
Lake at its latest meeting last,
but ODFW decided to not
move forward with the propos-
al.
“ODFW had already decid-
ed earlier this year to not pro-
pose coastal freshwater fish-
eries on wild Coho on the north
and central coast,” said ODFW
Ocean Salmon Technical
Resources Manager Christine
Mallette. “Our decision to also
not propose any coastal fresh-
water
fisheries
in
the
Southwest Zone is responsive
to concerns that the wild Coho
run may be lower than antici-
pated.”
Wild Coho seasons in
Siltcoos and Tahkenitch lakes,
as well as federally authorized
ocean fisheries, are not impact-
ed by this decision.
tion.
The middle school office is
ready to help with that process,
as well as school registration,
from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3
p.m. Monday through Friday.
More information and a ten-
tative schedules will be avail-
able there. For more informa-
tion, call the middle school at

ticipated in this sport before,

This year the grand prize at
the Siuslaw Open is a brand
new Ford F150 truck. “All that
is necessary is to hit a hole-in-
one on the designated hole,”
said David Wiegan, tourna-
ment co-chair and former
golfer.
“First, get the distance cor-
rect, then hit it straight. It’s a
piece of cake — Well, almost.”
Johnston Motors is once
again the hole-in-one contest
sponsor at the sixth Annual
Siuslaw Open.
This year, the event will be
held at Ocean Dunes on
Saturday, Sept. 10, with regis-
tration starting at 9 a.m.
The entry fee is $89 per
player or $320 per team, and
this year there is an early regis-
tration discount.
The fee will be $79 per play-
er or $290 per team if received
by this Friday, Aug. 26.
Entry forms are available at
SOS, 1576 West 12th St., Abel
Insurance, Oregon Pacific
Bank, the Siuslaw News, and
