MID COAST LAKES:
Rainbow trout stocking
is complete along the mid
coast. Holdover trout will
be available in most lakes
through
the
summer.
Fishing for the various
warm water fish species is
good this time of year as
fish move to the shallows
for spawning. There are
numerous lakes in the
Florence area that can pro-
vide good opportunity.

The fall sports season officially got underway this week with Siuslaw’s football, volleyball, cheerleading and
cross country teams beginning their first week of daily doubles in preparation for the start of preseason com-
petition in little more than a week. Next Friday, the Viking football team will kick things off with its annual
Blue and Gold Night, when Siuslaw fans get their first glimpse of this year’s roster and some of the plays the
Vikings will be executing. Also on hand will be the Viking cheerleading squad, which will introduce chants
and routines fans can expect to see this fall. Blue and Gold Night will take place at Hans Petersen Field on
Friday, Aug. 26, beginning at 7 p.m.
Cutthroat
For cutthroat trout, cast-
ing small spinners, spoons
or fly fishing streamers or
dry flies can be very effec-
tive. Angling for all species
in streams above tidewater
is restricted to artificial
flies and lures until Sept. 1.
Casting small spinners,
spoons or fly fishing
streamers or dry flies can
be very effective.
ALSEA RIVER: Cutthroat
The Alsea River is open
for cutthroat trout, casting
small spinners, spoons or
fly fishing streamers or dry
flies can be very effective.
Bait is not allowed above
the head of tide through
Sept. 1.

Siuslaw Vikings pitcher Gabe
Simington hopes to one day walk in
the steps of Dodgers’ Hall of Famer
Sandy Koufax.
The talented Mapleton sophomore
already has found common ground, lit-
erally.
For one week this summer
Simington had the experience of a life-
time, an all-expenses-paid trip to USA
Baseball’s
Elite
Development
Invitational in Historic Dodgertown in
Vero Beach, Fla.
Vero Beach was the home of the
spring training camp for the Brooklyn
and Los Angeles Dodgers from 1948 to
2009, when the team relocated to mod-
ern facilities in the Phoenix area.
“It was so humbling,” Simington
said last Saturday, while joining
Siuslaw teammates working the
Vikings Cup golf tournament at Ocean
Dunes Golf Links. “It was very hum-
bling because everyone was at your
level. They see that. Overall, very
humbling.”

Steelhead, cutthroat
Steelhead fishing is fair.
This run typically peaks by
early July. Casting spin-
ners, drifting bait or using
a bobber and jig can be
effective. Cover water and
fish small and simple as
the river conditions are low
and clear. For cutthroat
trout, casting small spin-
ners, spoons or fly fishing
streamers or dry flies can
be very effective.
