Over the last two years,
Western Lane Community
Foundation (WLCF) has added
six scholarships to its summer
scholarship program. For the
2016 summer cycle, a total of
eight continuing education
scholarships were awarded to
students in the Siuslaw and
Mapleton school district geo-
graphic boundary.
Two years ago, the WLCF
scholarship committee found
that there was a gap in scholar-
ship funding for those who
want to return to or who are in
the middle of their higher edu-
cation.
For 2015, the WLCF board
added
four
Continuing
Education Scholarships to the
existing Arlis Ulman Nursing
and Don Tiegan Second
Chance Scholarships. For
2016, The Beachcomber
Community Fund allocated
$2,000, following an extreme-
ly successful scholarship drive.
WLCF has announced the
2016 summer scholarship pro-
gram recipients.
The $3,000 Arlis Ulman
Nursing Scholarship was
awarded to Emily Laing.
Laing works at PeaceHealth
and carries a 3.2 grade point
average
in
the
Lane
Community College nursing
program.
Tiffany Dempsey, an United
States Air Force veteran, was
given the Don Tiegan Second
Chance Scholarship to attend
Lane Community College
majoring in Dental Hygiene.
She received a $1,500
Scholarship.
The two $1,000 Beach-
comber Community Scholar-
ships went to Kylie Brandt and
Jorge Loza Sanchez.
Brandt, a junior at Western
Oregon University, has a 3.62
GPA and majors in psychology
with the intent to eventually
become an elementary school
speech pathologist. Brandt
was a past recipient of the
Florence Future First Citizen
Award.
Sanchez is entering his sen-
ior year majoring in mechani-
cal engineering at Oregon
State University. His GPA is
3.5 and he intends to work in
the automotive design indus-
try.
Elyssa
Emerson,
Lila
Pattison, Elizabeth Wartnik
and Alexandra South each
received a $1,000 WLCF
Continuing Education Scho-
larship.
Emerson’s scholarship will
be used to continue her educa-
tion as a freshman at George
Fox University, where she is
majoring in English and music
education with the intent to
become a teacher.
She has been home
schooled, lives in Mapleton
and looks forward to attending
the university.
Pattison,
also
home
schooled, with a GPA of 3.73,
will be attending Cedarville
University in Ohio, majoring
in nursing and plans to become
a Midwife. She currently lives
in Deadwood.
Wartnik will start her sopho-
more year at George Fox
University, wher she carries a
3.84 GPA in her music major.
She also received a $1,000
scholarship in 2015 from
WLCF.
WLCF’s final Continuing
Education Scholarship winner
is Alexandra South.
She will be entering her
sophomore year at Lane
Community College majoring
in physical therapy with a GPA
of 3.0. She balances her
schooling while working full
time as a nursing assistant at
Regency Florence.
Western Lane Commun-
ity Foundation distributed
$36,500 in education scholar-
ships this year between both
the spring and summer scholar-
ship program cycles.
