Hands-On
from 1B
this year, went to state as a
freshman in his first year of
wrestling.
“Brock got a late start but
found his groove pretty quick-
ly,” said Ron Bresser. “With as
much as wrestling has given to
us as a family, we love having
the opportunity to give back
and support the sport.”
So when Siuslaw head coach
Neil Wartnik approached him
about participating in a
wrestling camp he wanted to
establish, Bresser was on board
immediately.
“Ron is a terrific coach
whose technical level is well
above where we are,” said
Wartnik. “Having the chance to
spend two days with him and
his family of wrestlers is amaz-
ing.”
And the Bressers do it for
free.
“This is about sharing the
love of the sport and helping
programs get to the next level,”
said Bresser. “The wrestling
community isn’t about keeping
things to yourself if it can take
the sport to another level. If you
can share something with oth-
ers that makes them better, it’s
good for everyone.”
Over the course of last week-
end, 26 participants ages 7 to 17
from Florence as well as North
Bend, Reedsport, Waldport and
as far away as Klammath Falls
got a chance to bring their
wrestling to another level
thanks to the Bressers.
“Ron has coached 60
wrestlers who have gone on to
receive full-ride scholarships at
top colleges,” said Wartnik.
“Having wrestlers and coaches
here from different places they
take that knowledge and share
it with others.
“We need that kind of thing
happening in wrestling pro-
grams along the coast.”
While wrestling programs in
the valley have continued to
grow, high school programs
along the coast have dwindled
in comparison, with several his-
torically strong wrestling pro-
grams either down to a skeleton
roster or with none at all.
“That’s why we wanted to
establish this opportunity and
invite other coastal programs
here,” said Wartnik. “It’s a
chance to help revitalize the
sport in this region.”
Though Bresser, whose fam-
ily
camped
at
nearby
Honeyman State Park for the
weekend, offered his instruc-
tion for free, there were still
costs involved. To help cover
them, Wartnik got support from
W.G. Peterson Woodworking,
Inc., Sea Lion Caves, Sand
Dunes Frontier/Torex ATV
Rentals, Fred Meyer and Dr.
Bob Estill/ Chevron Corp.
“They are a part of our
wrestling community as well,”
said Wartnik. “We are so thank-
ful for their support, along with
our school’s culinary teacher,
Kyle Lewis, who helped pre-
pare meals for campers and
shopped for all the groceries it
took to feed everyone.”
Bresser said his experience
was such a positive one that he
is not only talking with Wartnik
about another camp next sum-
mer, but a return as early as this
October for a follow-up camp.
“We saw so much growth
over the course of this camp,”
said Wartnik. “Not just in terms
of skills development, but also
personal growth and confi-
dence.
“We’d like to double our
numbers next year and keep
sharing that knowledge and
love of the sport.”
