It only seemed fitting when the
Siuslaw Watershed Council (SWC)
named Shiloh Sundstrom as its
“Spirit of the Siuslaw” award recip-
ient posthumously during its meet-
ing last February.
The Deadwood resident and
Mapleton High School graduate,
who earned a masters degree in for-
est resources from Oregon State
University in 2009, dedicated much
of his time to the watershed over the
years before a tragic hit-and-run
accident took his life at age 34 last
November.
RETURNS FOR
As an intern with the SWC in
2006, Sundstrom began the Salmon
Run 5K as a fundraiser for its water-
shed programs, particularly its sum-
mer camps for kids — hands-on
experiences that introduces them to
the area’s ecosystem, wildlife and
the importance of conservation.
“The run lasted about three years
but sort of fizzled out after Shiloh
went to college,” said Tom Burke of
the SWC.
This past February, while accept-
ing the “Spirit” award on behalf of
his son, Johnny Sundstrom chal-
lenged the board to start the run
again.

idea to get that tradition going
again,” said Burke.
As a result, Burke and volunteers
began digging into old permits
issued a decade ago to retrace the
route Sundstrom established and
keep it as close to the original as
they could. Unfortunately, road clo-
sures and restrictions wouldn’t
allow for the same route, but the
council kept it as close as possible.

ure, the Oregon Department
of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW)
will not propose any coastal
freshwater fisheries on wild
Coho this fall due to concerns
over poor ocean survival and
adequate spawning escape-
ment to coastal rivers this
year.
The Fish and Wildlife
Commission was scheduled
to consider a limited fishery
in the Coos, Coquille and
Umpqua rivers and Tenmile
Lake at its latest meeting, but
ODFW decided to not move
forward with the proposal.

Rainbow trout stocking
is complete along the mid
coast. Holdover trout will
be available in most lakes
through
the
summer.
Fishing for the various
warm water fish species is
good this time of year as
fish move to the shallows
for spawning. There are
numerous lakes in the
Florence area that can pro-
vide good opportunity.
It was the largest turnout ever for the
Florence Rotary’s annual “Cool at the
Coast” golf tournament fundraiser last
Saturday, Aug. 6, with 140 players on
the greens at Ocean Dunes Golf Links.
Rotarian and trumpeter Ron Green
started things off with a moving rendi-
tion of the National Anthem, followed
by a flyover from pilot Sam Spayd of
Aero Legends in his blue and gold
Wolrd War II biplane signaling the offi-
cial shotgun start of the event.
The Rotary Club of Florence started
planning its very first Cool at the Coast
golf tournament six years ago to help
