No wild Coho season in bays, estuaries this fall

As a precautionary measure, the
Oregon Department of Fish and
Wildlife (ODFW) will not propose any
coastal freshwater fisheries on wild
Coho this fall due to concerns over
poor ocean survival and adequate
spawning escapement to coastal rivers
this year.
The Fish and Wildlife Commission
was scheduled to consider a limited
fishery in the Coos, Coquille and
Umpqua rivers and Tenmile Lake at its
latest meeting, but ODFW decided to
not move forward with the proposal.
“ODFW decided earlier this year
not to propose coastal freshwater fish-
eries on wild Coho on the north and
central coasts,” said ODFW Ocean
Salmon Resources Manager Christine
Mallette. “Our decision to also not pro-
pose any coastal freshwater fisheries in
the Southwest Zone is responsive to
concerns that the wild Coho run may
be lower than anticipated.”
Wild Coho seasons in Siltcoos and
Tahkenitch lakes, as well as federally
authorized ocean fisheries, are not
impacted by this decision.

It was a vision that members of

“Once I was officially offered the

make the weightroom a place that
felt inviting for everyone,” said
Jamin Pool. “I want it to be for more
than football, and a place with
equipment that would be beneficial

Rainbow trout stocking
is complete along the mid
coast. Holdover trout will
be available in most lakes
through the summer.
Fishing for the various
warm water fish species is
good this time of year as
fish move to the shallows
for spawning. There are
numerous lakes in the
Florence area that can pro-
vide good opportunity.
Cutthroat
For cutthroat trout, cast-
ing small spinners, spoons
or fly fishing streamers or
dry flies can be very effec-
tive. Angling for all species
in streams above tidewater
is restricted to artificial
flies and lures until Sept. 1.
Casting small spinners,
spoons or fly fishing
streamers or dry flies can
be very effective.
ALSEA RIVER: Cutthroat
The Alsea River is open
for cutthroat trout, casting
small spinners, spoons or
fly fishing streamers or dry
flies can be very effective.
Bait is not allowed above
the head of tide until Sept.

Siuslaw pins OSU coaches for wrestling camp

Wrestling Camp.
Siuslaw News
Anyone who has watched longtime
Siuslaw wrestling coach Neil Wartnik
near the mats knows he can be an
excitable guy. It’s with that same level
of excitement that he announced
Thursday that his plans for a wrestling
camp had come to fruition — in a big
way.
“We’re going to have an incredible
group of coaches here from Oregon
State University sharing their knowl-
edge with wrestlers of all ages,” said
Wartnik. “It’s going to be something
special. We had originally planned to
have our wrestlers help coach, but I
want them in there learning.”
So instead, members of the Vikings
wrestling team will join other campers

Steelhead, cutthroat
Steelhead fishing is fair.
This run typically peaks by
early July. Casting spin-
ners, drifting bait or using
a bobber and jig can be
effective. Cover water and
fish small and simple as
the river conditions are low
and clear. For cutthroat
trout, casting small spin-
ners, spoons or fly fishing
streamers or dry flies can
be very effective.
WILSON RIVER:
Steelhead, Chinook, cut-
throat
Fishing for steelhead
and spring Chinook is
slow. The water is low and
clear, so use lighter gear
and target the deeper hold-
ing areas. Trout angling
should be fair.
