Our Town to discuss public art today
The traditional methods
employed by local govern-
ments to attract and develop
new businesses are changing.
One method being employed
is by making the community as
attractive and “livable” as pos-
sible,
says
Florence’s
Economic
Development
Coordinator Kelli Weese, who
believes public art can make
the community stand out as
well as make it more attractive
to someone looking to relocate
and bring new jobs with them.
Weese, along with chairman
of the city’s Public Art
Committee, Harlen Springer,
will be on today’s edition of
Coast Radio’s “Our Town” to
talk about how they’re hoping
to create several pockets of
public art throughout the com-
munity. City Councilor Joshua
Greene will also be on the
panel.
It airs on KCST, FM 106.9,
tonight, from 4 to 6 p.m., then
again Thursday, Aug. 4, on
KCFM, AM1250-FM 104.1,
from 10 a.m. to noon.
This month’s “Our Town”
will also feature several other
conversations, including two
related to athletics at Siuslaw
High School. Chris Johnson, a
long time cross country and
track and field coach at Siuslaw,
was recently named the athletic
director. He’ll also talk about
the upcoming induction cere-
mony for the Siuslaw High
School Athletic Hall of Fame.
In a separate segment, newly
appointed head football coach,
Jamin Pool, will talk about the
pressures of taking over a high-
ly successful program that has
only had two other coaches in
the past 50 years.
Meg Spencer is one of eight
“Siuslaw Vision Keepers,” a
group that has been working
with several different commu-
nity groups over the past 18
months to develop a common
vision for what our region
could look like over the next 10
years.
She and the others have
become the core growth that
grew out of the Siuslaw
Pathways project, aimed at
identifying several key projects
and goals for the community.
Spencer will talk about some
of those goals, including
increasing access to local trans-
portation and health care; creat-
ing community centers; and the
possible creation of a regional
parks and recreation depart-
ment.
The other segment in “Our
Town” will feature Lane
Community College Florence
Center director Russ Pierson
and LCC’s director of finan-
cial-aid, Helen Faith.
They’ll talk about the
“Oregon Promise,” recent leg-
islative efforts to offer low- or
no-cost college for high school
graduates in Oregon.

Friends to host book sale this weekend
The Friends of the Siuslaw
Public Library will be sponsor-
ing a book sale Saturday, Aug.
6, and Sunday, Aug. 7, at 1460
Ninth St.
Members of the Friends are
invited to an early sale time at 9
a.m. The sale opens to the pub-
lic on both days at 10 a.m., and
runs until 4 p.m. The book sale
will be held in the library’s
Bromley Room.
Memberships can be pur-
chased at the door.
Marilyn Wetstein, chair-
woman of the book sales, urges
everyone to take advantage of
the excellent prices for books,
CDs and DVDs.
Since joining the Friends just
a year ago, Wetstein has
become an important contribu-
tor to the sales. The most recent
event she organized was in
February, which raised $2,287.
“It’s a lot of work but highly
gratifying,” said Wetstein. “I
like to see books not on the
shelves but in peoples’ hands.”
A popular feature of the
book sales is the table of spe-
cial books run by Geraldine
Mcmahon. This table will be
set up in the library lobby and
Mcmahon will be on hand to
talk about the passion of her
life: books.
This sale has 230 boxes of
books to set out with another 20
boxes still on the shelves.
Duane
Fowler,
who’s
worked on the book sorting and
sales for 10 years, finds the
boxes stacked head high. These
all have to be moved into the
Bromely Room and onto the
tables. A cadre of hard working,
dedicated volunteers takes care
of that chore on the Friday
before the sale.
Fowler is also active in
stocking the sale shelves in the
Friends Book Store inside the
library left of the entrance.
This corner store includes
greeting cards, books, maga-
zines, audio books and music
CDs.
Magazines sell for 25 cents
each or five for $1. Hardback
fiction is $2 and paperbacks are
$1. Nonfiction, children’s
books, audio books and CDs
are individually priced as are
the note cards which are made
from material culled from the
library.
Since Jan. 1, the Friends
Book Store has raised more
than $5,900 in support of the
library book selection.
“I just want to remind every-
body that all these proceeds go
directly to the library for
Director Meg Spencer’s wish
list,” said Wetstein. “It’s for the
things above and beyond the
library’s annual budget.”
How To Participate
The fee to participate is $20. An ad for the Community Wide Garage Sale with a map of
all participating sales will be published in the Siuslaw News on September 7th and 10th.
Because of print deadlines, the registration deadline is 5pm August 30 2016.
You will also receive two offi cial Community Wide Garage Sale signs as well as a tip
sheet on how to have a great sale. Please post signs only on private property with the
owner’s consent. Posting signs on City utility poles, street or signal light poles, and
median strips is against the municipal code.
Additional maps will be available at the Florence Visitors Center and the Siuslaw News.
