Saturday, golfers could win new Mustang and more
Can lightning strike twice in
the same place? If it does, John
Scott thinks that Saturday, Aug.
6, would be a good time. That’s
when Rotary’s seventh annual
Cool at the Coast golf tourna-
ment will happen at Ocean
Dunes Golf Links.
Scott is a Rotarian and an
avid golfer. He was the last per-
son to hit a hole in one on the
eighth hole at Ocean Dunes.
That happened Sept. 15,
2015.
The day was sunny, clear,
and breezy, according to Scott.
He hit a 5-iron off the tee,
approximately 140 yards and
right into the hole.
“I had several reliable wit-
nesses too,” Scott said.
Hole No. 8 plays 150 yards
straight downhill from a high
tee with a panoramic view. It
goes down steeply to a two-
level green nestled in a charm-
ing dell below. The green is
well guarded on the left by a
dry hazard and tall trees and on
the right by a trio of bunkers.
A hole-in-one here takes a
combination of skill and luck.
When Scott tees off
Saturday, the weather is likely
to once again be sunny, clear
and breezy. If luck strikes
twice, he could drive home in a
shiny red Ford Mustang.
The hole in one prize is
sponsored by Three Rivers
Casino Resort, and the car is
provided by Johnston Motors.
Of course, 135 other golfers
will be aiming for the same
prize.
And if you’re not a golfer?
One of the exciting features
of Rotary’s seventh annual
Cool at the Coast golf tourna-
ment has almost nothing to do
with golf.
It’s the big opportunity draw-
ing prize available to anyone
with a ticket: a week’s getaway
at San Diego Country Estates.
And what a getaway it is. It’s
close to the dining and enter-
tainment that San Diego has to
offer, including Sea World, the
San Diego Zoo and much more.
The resort itself is nestled

annual Lighthouse Photo
Contest. The contest is open to
all amateur photographers.
Employees, volunteers, and
immediate family members of
those employed by the BLM or
FOYL are not eligible to partic-
ipate.
All photos must be taken in
or from the Yaquina Head
Outstanding Natural Area or
the Yaquina Bay State
Recreation Site.
Photos taken from vantage
points outside these areas that
show one of these areas are also
eligible.
Any photos taken from
unmanned drones will not be
eligible.
Photos should be submitted
in two ways: Matted prints, no
glass or frames. Minimum size
is a 5” x 7” photo with a 6” x 8”
mat, and the maximum matted

size is 16” x 20.”
Photos also need to be sub-
mitted in digital format using
either .jpeg, .jpg, .gif or .tif for-
mat, no files larger than 10 MB
please.

must be submitted by the end of
the day on Sept. 23.
Judging will take place the
last week of September, with
the winners being notified by or
on Sept. 30.
All entries will then be on
exhibit in the Yaquina Head
Interpretive Center, in the
Yaquina Room, during the
month of October.

dinner tickets available
The annual Siuslaw Athletic
Booster Club auction and din-
ner will be a “Booster Barn
Bash” on Aug. 20 at the King
family barn up the North Fork.
Tickets are on sale now at
The Shippin’ Shack, Windrift
Gallery and Coastal Fitness.
Tickets are $40.
There will be plenty of
parking available at the event
and shuttles leaving and
returning to Three Rivers
Casino. Three Rivers has
offered a special room rate for
the auction of $129 for Aug.
19 and/or Aug. 20, with $29
from each reservation going
directly to the Booster Club.

Auction donations are wel-
come, including experiences,
specialty items, themed bas-
kets and cash donations are
welcome for purchasing items.

Great Wolf Lodge trip, tickets
to sporting events, a custom
built chicken coop and more,”
said auction chairman Jennifer
Waggoner.
The Booster Club donates to
the high school and middle
school sports programs in sig-
nificant ways. The SABC
donates toward the actual cost

“We played golf three
times,” said 2015 winner Sally
Wantz. “It was fabulous. And
the restaurants are really good,
especially breakfast overlook-
ing the course. And we loved
being able to enjoy cooking and
dining in our wonderful one-
bedroom condo.”

Meet June Bug
Hey there I’m June Bug. Are
you a single lady that has just had
it with men, I’m the dog for you. I
am very stressed out here in the
kennels and need a soft place to
land. I’m afraid of men, even men I
have known for a while make me
nervous.
While in the kennels I make it
seem like I hate other dogs, but
when I get to go for car rides with
volunteers I don’t care about any
dogs, joggers, or bicycles.
