City Lights to screen tale of troubled saxophonist
City Lights Cinemas is host-
ing a one-day special engage-
ment of “Sound Oof Red-
emption: The Frank Morgan
Story” on Tuesday, Aug. 2, at
11:30 a.m. and 6:10 p.m.
In this new documentary,
director N.C. Heikin recreates
the life of Frank Morgan in
concert form, tracing his
progress from teenage musical
prodigy to hardcore junkie and,
finally, to one of the music
world’s most remarkable
comeback stories.
“Florence jazz fans should
not miss this one,” said
Michael Falter, owner of City
Lights. “The level of musician-
ship in both archive footage
and the San Quentin all-star
tribute is nothing short of
amazing.
“I had to give it a chance
here.”
A one-night-only, all-star
musical tribute filmed live at
San Quentin forms the back-
bone of a film that brings
together the past, present and
future of Morgan’s musical
legacy. Moving seamlessly
between the thrilling live per-
formance and the riveting true
story of a musician whose tal-
ent first destroyed and then
redeemed him, the award-win-
ning filmmaker paints a sear-
ingly honest portrait of a prodi-
giously gifted, tragically
flawed musical genius.
“For all its time spent
dwelling in the lower depths,
‘Sound of Redemption’ ulti-
mately fulfills the promise
implicit in its title,” said Joe
Leydon of Variety. “The view-
er is left with profoundly
mixed emotions, haunted by
questions of what might and
should have been.”
Ken Jaworowski of the New
York Times said, “It’s a fond
and forgiving tribute to the
man, filled with music that
moves beyond happy and sad,
and toward something like bril-
liance.”
Ticket prices are $9 regular,
$8 for senior, $7.50 for matinee
and $6.50 for City Lights mem-
bers.

Literary salon
set for writers
The literary salon of 1930s
Paris is making a comeback.
Designed as a convivial event
celebrating the written word
and made famous by the film
“Midnight in Paris,” literary
salons help to promote local
writers and their work while
upholding the literary arts in a
digital era.
Writers on the River will
present its first “Midnight in
Florence” literary salon on
Saturday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 8
p.m., at the Florence Regional
Arts Alliance (FRAA), 120
Maple St. in Old Town.
Presented by FRAA creative
writing instructor and award-
winning journalist Catherine J.
Rourke, the salon is free and
open to the public.
Following the tradition of
Gertrude Stein’s infamous
Parisian salons, each monthly
event will highlight a “Featured
Writer” who will talk about
their writing and share an
excerpt from their work.
An open mic segment fol-
lows, during which writers of
all levels and genres are invited
to read, recite or sing excerpts
from their published or unpub-
lished material.
Refreshments will be avail-
able.
“Literary salons inspire,
unite and support all writers
while providing cultural
enrichment and entertainment,”
Rourke said. “We are bringing
the River Seine to the Siuslaw
and the Left Bank to Bay
Street.”
Florence artist and author
Karen Nichols will appear as
this month’s featured writer,
sharing passages from her four
published novels: “Triumph
Over Fear,” “Second Chance
Heart,” “The Unexpected Gift”
and “Thornton House.”
Nichols facilitates the
Coastal Writers, a local critique
group, and will soon finish an
anthology of short stories in
time for the sixth annual
Florence Festival of Books, for
which she is also a member of
the planning committee.
Visit www.karendnichols.
com for more info.
Reading slots are limited to
five minutes on a first-come
basis. Those who wish to par-
ticipate in the open mic must
arrive at 5:30 p.m. to sign up.

the event.

social events as an opportunity
for open exchange and net-
working to support writers on
their journey.
