Pinewood derby raises $1,600 for museum
COURTESY PHOTO
Beachcomber Pub and Lagunitas Brewing Company sponsored a pinewood car derby race on April 1 to benefit
the Oregon Coast Military Museum. The race raised $1,600 for the museum’s general fund. Oregon Coast Military
Museum’s President Wayne Sharpe said, “The fundraiser was a success. The cooperation and donations of busi-
nesses and this community are what support the ongoing efforts of the museum.” Scott Waiss, owner of the
Beachcomber, says they are planning another pine car race to benefit the museum in the near future. Pictured

member Gary Cannon; and Scott McMillan of Columbia Distributing.
Red Cross urges blood, platelet donors to give this summer
While thousands of people
from across the country
responded to the emergency
request for blood and platelet
donations issued by the
American Red Cross in early
July, a critical blood shortage
remains.
Donors of all blood types
are urgently needed to help
restock the shelves. The Red
Cross is thanking those who
come in to donate blood or
platelets between this week
and Aug. 31 by emailing them
a $5 Amazon.com gift card
claim code.
Those in Florence who
would like to donate can do so
at the Lane Blood Mobile,
which will be in Florence on
Monday, Aug. 8, from noon to
5 p.m., at the Florence Events
Center, 715 Quince St.
The Red Cross urges eligi-
ble donors to give now to help
ensure blood is available
throughout the rest of the sum-
mer to meet patient needs.
At times, blood and
platelets are being distributed
to hospitals faster than dona-
tions are coming in, which
impacts the ability to rebuild
the blood supply.
Right now, the Red Cross
has less than a five-day blood
supply on hand.
The Red Cross strives to
have a five-day supply at all
times to meet the needs of
patients every day and be pre-
pared for emergencies that
may require significant vol-
umes of donated blood prod-
ucts.
“The Red Cross continues
to have an emergency need for
blood and platelet donors to
give now and help save patient
lives,” said Neil Tosuntikool,
donor recruitment director of
the Red Cross Pacific
Northwest Blood Services
Region. “We are grateful for
those who have already
stepped up this summer to
give and want to remind those
who are eligible that hospital
patients are still counting on
them to roll up a sleeve.”
In the United States, every
two seconds someone like Ray
Poulin needs blood or
platelets.
Poulin’s liver and kidneys
failed following a serious
blood infection. The situation
became urgent when his liver
hemorrhaged. He was given a
10 percent chance of survival.
After receiving 77 units of
blood, Poulin defied the odds.
“There was a lot that went
into saving my life, but if the
blood wasn’t available when I
needed it, I wouldn’t be here
KB Gallery to host
artist Q&A Saturday
On Saturday, July 30,
Kenneth B Gallery will sponsor
an artist question and answer
session from 1 to 2 p.m. with
featured artist Tamarah Phillips.
Phillips was charged with
producing more than 24 new
paintings in less than four
months for her exhibit that runs
through Aug. 5.
The result was a profound
success and has nearly been a
sellout exhibit for the gallery.
Learn about the rigors of disci-
pline Phillips tasked herself
with in order to accomplish her
goals and the joys of develop-
ing a new found “creative con-
sciousness” as a result of hard,
focused work.
In addition, there may be a
surprise of one or more new
paintings added to the exhibit.
Enjoy light hors d’oeuvres
and refreshments for this ses-
sion as the artist explains how
she broke through old routines
and developed new painting
skills.
The Kenneth B Gallery Art
Studios is at 1458 First St. in
Old Town Florence, just one
block from Bay Street, next
door to Lovejoy’s Tea House.

today,” said Poulin.
Blood and platelets are
needed for many different rea-
sons.
Accident and burn victims,
heart surgery patients, organ
transplant patients, and those
receiving
treatment
for
leukemia, cancer or sickle cell
disease may all need blood.
