Soccer’s unsettled foothold in the local
sports landscape is taking a new direction
this fall.
The newly formed Siuslaw Youth Soccer
Association (SYSA) has begun registering
area youth ages 5 to 18 for its inaugural fall
season at Miller Park.
The SYSA is taking control of the sport
for the younger age groups from the Boys
and Girls Club of Western Lane County,
while opening it up for players at the high
school level.
Once again this fall, Siuslaw will be the
only 4A school not offering the sport.
“Our goal in the coming months and
years (is) to have soccer available to players
5 to 18, to compete against other coastal
clubs, and to bring tournaments to our won-
derful coastal town,” the SYSA explains in
its mission statement.
The City of Florence has shown its sup-
port by purchasing a set of soccer goals for
Miller Park. In addition, the Boys and Girls
Club donated two more sets of goals, along
withother equipment to be used for prac-
tices and tournaments. Practice begins in
early September and first matches tentative-
ly are scheduled for Sept. 17.
SYSA officers include president
Cameron Jagoe, vice president Erin Linton,
treasurer Londi Tomaro, secretary Tim
Tregoning and registrar Amy Tregoning.
The SYSA is affiliated with the Oregon
Youth Soccer Association.

tradition when this year’s Siuslaw
Football Camp gets underway Aug. 8.
“The theme for our camp is
‘Building on Tradition’ because our
goal is to continue to build on the
Viking culture and traditions,” said
new football head coach Jamin Pool.
“We want to keep the things that have
made this a premier program, and find
ways to enhance the things that got us
there.”

Early signups for B&GC fall sports ends Friday
Registration has begun for the Boys
and Girls Club’s fall sports season,
with Friday, July 29, the deadline for
early-bird rates.
Fees go up $15 after Friday, with the
final deadline for registration Aug. 19.
Activities include flag football for
grades 1-4, tackle football for grades 5-
6, cross country running for grades 3-5,
volleyball for grades 3-6 and cheer-
leading for grades 1-8.
Early-bird fees are $85 for tackle
football and $40 for all other sports.
After Friday, fees will be $100 and
$55, respectively.
The fees do not include the $25
annual membership nor the cost of uni-
forms or jerseys.
