Free student backpack giveaway at local Verizon store July 30
Deserving young students in
Florence will soon benefit from
a national backpack giveaway
campaign.
TCC, the largest Verizon
Authorized Retailer in the U.S.,
has announced A Wireless is
partnering with the company
and its Culture of Good to
donate 235,000 backpacks full
of school supplies to children
through TCC’s annual School
Rocks Backpack Giveaway.
Since 2013, TCC has donat-
ed more than 360,000 back-
packs filled with supplies to
ensure children are well pre-
pared for the start of the school
year.
“Every year, TCC employ-
ees and communities around
the country look forward to the
backpack giveaway,” said Scott
Moorehead, CEO of TCC. “It
brings our employees immense
joy to give back to the young
children in their communities,
and we are proud to put so
many smiles on the faces of the
deserving families who have
made this annual event such a
success.”
More than 1,300 participat-
ing TCC and A Wireless stores
across the U.S. are inviting
local families and their chil-
dren to visit select locations on
Saturday, July 30, between
noon and 3 p.m., to pick up a
backpack filled with various
WORD
school supplies, including pen-
cils, paper, a pencil box, folders
and glue. One backpack per
child present will be given
away on a first-come, first-
served basis while supplies
last.
The participating TCC store
in Florence is at 2775 Highway
101, Suite D. Each participat-
ing TCC store will donate 250
backpacks and each A Wireless
store will donate 125 back-
packs. All leftover backpacks
will be donated to local
schools.
“When given the opportuni-
ty, doing good is important, and
taking such opportunities to
help lift up and encourage oth-
ON THE
STREET
ers is a privilege,” said Bryan
Bevin, president and CEO. “At
A Wireless, we don’t just want
to be doers of good, we want to
inspire a Culture of Good.”
In 2015, the National Retail
Federation predicted the aver-
age person with children in
grades K-12 would spend
$97.74 on school supplies such
as notebooks, pencils and back-
packs. With more than 16 mil-
lion children in the U.S. living
in poverty, TCC is working to
alleviate the rising costs of
school supplies through this
annual program.

&
GERALDINE LUCIO
Owner, Old Town Barbershop
In the summer of 2015, Janet Snow moved to Florence from
Fresno, CA. She began working for Shorewood Retirement and
Elderberry Square. Residents fell in love with her. During the
Senior Fair at the Florence Event Center she asked why Florence
did not have a Red Kettle Campaign for h e Salvation Army. h e
answer, “No one has led the ef ort.” She volunteered and within
two months had over 50 volunteers to stand at the Kettles in six

When pressed
of a goal at an
organizational
gathering
the
group
decided
on $10,000 – far
above the national
average for an
area this size. h e
result was nearly
$17,000 – two and
a half times the
national average!
Snow says, “It was
a God h ing to
send us such great
volunteers!” One of
the key volunteers
is Geraldine Lucio, owner of Old Town Barbershop on Bay
Street. Geraldine took her Red Kettle to civic groups and other
organizations to promote the campaign, as well as to her Old
Town business associates.
Both Snow and Lucio were both nominated for the Florence
Area Chamber of Commerce 2015 First Citizen Award. In
January, an anonymous Florence area donor matched the
campaign total so that $34,000 is the total – nearly fi ve times the
national average per capita!
Janet and Geraldine will be looking again for new volunteers
to join the others who will return, including the Mayor Joe
Henry and his wife. Visit Geraldine at h e Old Town Barbershop
to of er your name and to be invited to organizational gatherings
this fall. Or, write Janet Snow of h e Salvation Army, PO Box
