Watershed focuses on salmon
ecosystems, coastal lake health
During the Siuslaw Water-
shed Council (SWC) general
meeting Wednesday, July 27, at
6:30 p.m., the topics will be
“The Salmon River Experi-
ments: Lessons for Intelligent
Tinkering in Salmon Ecosys-
tems” and “Aquatic Invasive
Species and the Oregon Lake
Watch Program.”
SWC’s meeting will be held
at the Honeyman State Park
Meeting Hall (big yurt), 5543
Canary Road. Doors open at 6
p.m. for the meeting at 6:30 p.m.
The meeting includes a pres-
entation by Dan Bottom, who
has led research efforts in the
Salmon and Columbia rivers to
understand what is behind the
changes in salmon populations
and the impacts of human
efforts to reverse declines in
salmon populations.
Bottom will share lessons
learned, including the results
of the most recent work to
understand the impact of coho
hatchery program suspension
that occurred on the Salmon
River.
Rich Miller, from Portland
State University’s Center for
Lakes and Reservoirs, will dis-
cuss aquatic invasive species in
lakes. This includes harmful
algae blooms and a new Lake
Watch Volunteer monitoring
program.
Miller will also conduct a
Lake Watch training in the
afternoon form 2 to 5 p.m. at
the meeting site. Interested per-

As always, the SWC board
of directors and executive
director will give project
updates and announcements of
upcoming activities.

items and a final reconciliation of payables. Co-op members voted 39 to 1 in favor of a board resolution to close the
organic food co-operative because of lack of support and financial difficulties. Final liquidation of assets will be today
from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the co-op, 1379 Rhododendron Drive.
OBITUARIES
CASSEY—Charles
R
Cassey, 83, formerly of
Florence, passed away at his
residence in Medford, Ore., on
July 9, 2016,
Chuck was born and raised
in Chicago, Ill., the only son of
Victor and Margaret Cassey.
He started his music career at
the age of six, playing the
accordion.
He received his Masters of
Music from the University of
Illinois and then joined the
Army, where he played in the
U.S. Army band and later
became the assistant conductor
for the U.S. Army Chorus.
After leaving the Army,
Chuck enjoyed a long musical
career in New York and Los
Angeles, applying his con-
ducting, composing, arranging
and vocal skills to film and tel-
evision.
Retiring in Florence, he
directed the FloTones, the
IMPOUNDMENT
community chorus and his
church choir.
He is survived by his wife,
Linda, and his beloved sons
Charles and Andrew.
He loved his Florence com-
munity and truly enjoyed the
country life out on the dunes.
A celebration of his rebirth
will be held Saturday, July 30,
at 1 p.m., at the Siuslaw
Presbyterian
Church
in
Florence.
