Clockwise from top left: Rolland Cox, 31, sets a new slalom record on the Honeyman State Park course with a time of 5.19 seconds; riders Matt Carter, Jackson Cruz, Jose Chaves and
Logan Livingston climb the dune face for another sand drag run Saturday; current sand drag world-record holder Erik Johnson tests the sand in preparation for a new world record attempt;
Sand Master Jam’s Junior Amateur division winner Diego Chaves, 14, gathers up his sandboard for a final run; and Taylor Bicandi, 20, tries her hand in the sand drag.

With Cruz and Cox each win-
ning one event, the two tied for
first place overall in the pro divi-
sion.
Gabe Cruz was second overall,
followed by Erik Johnson, who is
the current world record holder in
the event with a speed of 51 mph.
“The sand was simply too wet
to get that kind of speed,” said
Beale. “But Erik is going to be in
town for a while longer and
hopes to break his record before
he leaves.”
In the amateur division, it was
once again a family affair, with
brothers Brandon and Logan
Livingston finishing first and sec-
ond, respectively, on Saturday.
Logan was last year’s amateur
division winner.
Forty-six-year old Jose Chaves
finished third, but watched his
son, Diego, 14, win the junior
division.

Taylor Bicandi and Abby
Watkins, a senior at Siuslaw High
School, finished second and third,
respectively, in the junior amateur
division.
“It was a great way to celebrate
the 20th anniversary of this
event,” said Beale. “The sport has
come a long way since it first
began.”
The Sand Master Jam is part of
the world circuit, which includes
competitions in Peru, Chile,
Egypt, South Africa, Spain and
France. The U.S. is the only
country with two events with
points that count toward the
world title — and both are hosted
by Sand Master Park.
The next event, the X-West
Huck Fest, is an all-air competi-
tion with riders competing for the
biggest jumps and best tricks.
“It’s the one that has become
the favorite because it’s so spec-
tacular to watch,” said Beale.
“And now we will be holding it at
Three Rivers Casino Resort each
year, which makes it convenient
for spectators and competitors.
“We’re very excited about
working together.”
The X-West Huck Fest will
take place Saturday, Sept. 17,
from 2 to 4 p.m.
