Do Unto Animals
by Tracey Stewart
Book review by Susie Voth
Tracey Stewart is an animal
advocate. She and her husband
Jon Stewart (formally of The
Daily Show) own a 12-acre par-
cel in New Jersey.
In 2015, the couple decided
to partner with Farm Sanctuary,
America’s leading farm animal
protection organization, to help
save abused animals.
“Do Unto Animals” is Tracey
Stewart’s way to share her pas-
sion for animals with a wider
audience.
The book is divided into
three sections: Animals at
Home, Backyard Wildlife and
Falling in Love on the Farm.
The Animals at Home section
provides information about
those animals that we invite
into our homes — dogs and cats
as well as tropical birds,
rodents and fish.
Stewart offers very specific
information about how to make
dogs and cats happy, how to
interpret the language of ani-
mals, how to go about finding a
pet and many other useful tid-
bits of information.
She provides directions for
homemade animal crafts and
recipes for yummy treats in this
section.
Stewart’s passion for animals
does not stop at her front door.
She also steps into her yard to
embrace wildlife.
In section two, Backyard
Wildlife, she addresses many
pertinent issues such as the
importance of pollinators in a
garden. There are instructions
for making a “bee house” on
page 99. With the decline of the
bee population, small measures
like this can make a huge dif-
ference.
The final section of the book
is Falling in Love on the Farm.
Stewart writes, “Our rela-
tionship with farm animals is
perhaps the most fraught and
complicated...”
She discusses in detail
human relationships with cows,
pigs, horses, goats, sheep, and
other farm critters.
Stewart is a vegan, so the
animals on her farm will never
end up on the dining table.
They will be petted and treated
with loving kindness, just as we
would wish to be treated.

humor.
There’s music, too.
Chandler will be accompa-
nied by his acoustic guitar mas-
ter sidekick, Paul Benoit, as he
depicts scenes from his travels
across the United States.
Son of a Baptist preacher,
Chandler began performing as
a street musician. He describes
driving his car across the coun-
try to shows as “taking the
pulse of America.”

Part preacher, poet, vision-
ary and wandering minstrel,
Chandler can cast a spell over
his audience unlike any other
performer. For close to 30
years, he has performed his
vignettes about politics and
modern culture in coffee hous-
es and other venues about 250
times a year.
A show business veteran,
Chandler promises to be
provocative, hilarious and give
his audience an entertaining
evening.
To quote Mojo Nixon, “I
thought I was the last
American weirdo, and then I
met Chris Chandler.”
The show will take place at 7
p.m. in the library’s Bromley
Room, 1460 Ninth St.
Refreshments will be pro-
vided.
Chandler’s presentations are
rapid-fire, poetic expressions
which, below the surface,
betray a deep respect for lan-
guage, literature and democra-
cy.
There is no cover charge at
the door but donations for the
performers will be accepted.

Chandler, visit www.chris
