A MONTHLY COLUMN OF RECYCLING
INFORMATION PROVIDED BY F LORENCE

For the Siuslaw News
(A monthly column of recycling
information provided by Florence
Master Recyclers)
Q. I ordered some new equipment
that came surrounded in Styrofoam
packaging. Where can I recycle that?
A. The St. Vincent de Paul thrift
store, at 2315 Highway 101, accepts
block Styrofoam for recycling. This
is the solid, rigid foam only.
The more lightweight, flexible
foam, like from meat trays at the gro-
cery store, is not recyclable in our
area and must go in the trash. Please
consider packaging when making
purchases of any kind!
Also, while we're talking about
foam products, clean Styrofoam
packing peanuts can be dropped off at
local shipping stores for reuse.
Q. I heard something about a food
recycling movie being shown in
town. When is it? And where?
A. Thursday, Sept. 8, from 5:30 to
7 p.m., in the Port of Siuslaw confer-
ence room, at 80 Harbor St.
This is the regular meeting time of
the Florence Master Recyclers. Our
Lane County Waste Management
trainer, Kelly Bell, has arranged to
show an eye-opening documentary
called “Just Eat It — A Food Waste
Yachats to celebrate
100th, 50th anniversaries
YACHATS — In celebra-
tion of the 100th and 50th
Anniversaries of Yachats, the
Yachats Academy of Arts and
Sciences will host Lincoln
County Commissioner Bill
Hall and author Joanne Kittel
to help celebrate the occasion.
Presentations will take
place Sunday, July 17, at 2
p.m.,
at
the
Yachats
Commons.
July 2016 is the 100th
anniversary of Oceanview
changing its name to Yachats.
It is also the 50th anniversary
of when Yachats was incor-
porated as the City of
Yachats.
Kittel will speak about the
Native Americans who fre-
quented this area for cen-
turies. Living off the abun-
dance of the land, rivers and
ocean, the Ya’Xaik peoples, a
southern branch of the Alsea
Peoples, were able to survive
and thrive.
When this area was opened
up for homesteading, the
Coos, Lower Umpqua and
Alsea Peoples were incarcer-
ated at the Alsea Sub-Agency
in what became Yachats.
Kittel has been instrumen-
tal in bringing truth and rec-
onciliation between Tribal
People and the Yachats com-
munity, resulting in profound
transcendence.
Hall will speak about the
changes that took place when
homesteaders and settlers
started moving into the area,
following Yachats history to
present day, as Yachats con-
tinues to change with
new residents and new busi-
nesses.
Each speaker will be given
30 minutes for their presenta-
tion, with a 15-minute ques-
tion and answer follow-up.
There is no admission
charge for this presentation,
although a $5 donation
would help cover publicity
expenses.
For more information, visit
www.YachatsAcademy.org,
or www.GoYachats.com or
call 541-961-6695.
Story.” Kelly will be showing the 50-
minute version of the film, with a dis-
cussion and light snacks to follow.
You can view a short preview at this
link: www.vimeo.com/140226873.
We invite the public to attend the
event and learn more about the grow-
ing problem of food waste and what
can be done to address this issue.
Seating capacity in the room is
limited so please RSVP by calling the
Master Recycler Durable Dishware
phone line, 541-590-0506, and leave
your name and phone number to
reserve your seat. Visit www.face

for
details.
Q. What can I do with half-empty
paint cans?
A. The local Habitat ReStore, at
2016 Highway 101, is part of the
PaintCare paint-collection program.
This free program accepts partial or
full cans of architectural paint, stain,
primer, sealers, lacquers and varnish-
es. You can drop off acceptable paint
products at the collection bin behind
the ReStore, Tuesdays through
Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Do not bring: Leaking or lidless
containers, aerosol paints, paint thin-
ner, mineral spirits, solvents, auto or
marine paints, additives, colorants,
tints, resins, roof patch and repair,
deck cleaners, caulking or glues,
epoxies, adhesives, wood preserva-
tives containing pesticides, 2-com-
pound coatings, tar and bitumen-
based products, industrial mainte-
nance coating, or original equipment
manufacturer paints and finishes.
Reusable paint materials are sold
in the ReStore, reducing unnecessary
waste and offering quality paint at
very low prices.
Paint that is not resellable is trans-
ported to a facility for energy recov-
ery, fuel and reuse.
Visit www.paintcare.org for more
reduce and reuse tips.
Florence Master Recyclers (MR)
are part of the Lane County Master
Recycler Program, a service of the
county’s Public Works Waste
Management Division since 2002.
The mission of the MR program is to
bridge the gap between awareness
and action by motivating people to
reduce solid waste at home, work and
play. This monthly column, written
for the Siuslaw News, answers com-
monly asked recycling questions.
