SMART brings early literacy program to local youth
meaningful partnership that
will bring community mem-
bers into the school to sup-
port literacy.
“I’m really excited about
having SMART at Siuslaw
Elementary. It is exactly
what our kids need,” said
Harklerode.
The
program,
which
will serve Siuslaw’s third-
graders, will use SMART’s
proven model of pairing
adult volunteers with stu-
dents for one-on-one reading
sessions in combination
with access to books to
take home and keep.
SMART will support exist-
ing literacy efforts at Siuslaw
to help all students meet or
exceed the third-grade read-
ing benchmark, which is
widely recognized as a key
indicator of a child’s future
educational success.
Brown said, “SMART
South Coast is thrilled to be
welcoming back Siuslaw
Elementary after an eight-
year hiatus, and we look
forward to a long partnership
with Principal Michael
Harklerode at Siuslaw and
the Florence community.”
The SMART program at
Siuslaw will begin running in
early October. SMART’s
goal is to serve 30 third-
grade students this year at
Siuslaw.
SMART welcomes volun-
teers to the Siuslaw program.
SMART volunteer readers
commit to one hour a week
for 28 weeks.

unteering with SMART can
