Volunteers needed for July 4 event
Florence Area Chamber of
Commerce’s Fourth of July
Celebration is right around the
corner, and chamber represen-
tatives are working hard to
bring activities and fireworks
to the community that
Monday.
“We are in dire need of vol-
unteers the day of the event to
secure the Port of Siuslaw area
for the fireworks,” said cham-
ber Executive Director Bettina
Hannigan.
In all, the chamber needs 14
volunteers at various points of
the day and evening to help
make the event happen.
Hannigan said, “The port
has been very generous in
sharing its property for fire-
works launching. We the
Chamber and local community
need to provide security to

insure that the clearance area
around it is safe.”
The fireworks are sponsored
by local businesses and com-
munity members.

his year the Florence Food Share garden looks to surpass last year’s
10,000-pound record harvest for distribution to local families in need.
Executive Director Norma Barton said, “We (recently) harvested 67
pounds of organic snap peas and they went directly to our clients with-
in minutes of harvesting.” This year Food Share’s Master Gardener Bart Mealer is
growing three types of peppers and several tomato varieties in the two green-
houses and broccoli, potatoes, herbs, Swiss chard, beets, carrots, summer
squash, winter squash, pole beans and onions in the outdoor raised beds. “This
is literally farm to table,” Mealer said.
