Oregon Coast Military
Museum seeks public input
The Oregon Coast Military
Museum, which opened July
4, 2015, is approaching its first
anniversary, and the board of
directors is working on a
strategic plan to take the
organization into its next
phase. To do that, it is seeking
the public’s input on how it
would like to see the museum
move forward.
“The Florence community
has shown tremendous support
for this effort for the last six
years, allowing us to get the
initial museum created and
open,” said museum board
president Wayne Sharpe.
“Now it’s time for us to deter-
mine where we want to go
from here: stay small and stat-
ic as we are now to some
degree, or do we expand,
which would allow us to dis-
play more of the artifacts
we’ve collected from our sup-
porters over that time?
“Do we change our mission
or keep it on task to honor our
veterans by educating our pub-
lic?”
“Since the museum effort
began back in 2009, we have
accumulated an enormous
amount of military artifacts
such as weaponry, uniforms,
personal items from veterans
and their families,” said exec-
utive director Cal Applebee.
“We need to determine how
we can continue to collect and
preserve that heritage, which
means we may have to expand
the physical facility.
“To help us determine that,
we have begun a Strategic
Planning process but really
want to get the input of our
community and supporters.”
Interested community mem-
bers can visit the museum
website
www.oregoncoast
militarymuseum.com
and
download a simple survey to
provide thoughts and ideas.
Input can also be emailed
directly to Applebee at cal
97439@gmail.com, or mailed
to the museum at P.O. Box
2040, Florence, OR 97439.
The target date for submit-
ting input to the museum is
June 30, which will allow the
board to incorporate that infor-
mation into its planning meet-
ing in mid-July.
“This museum really came
about because of the veteran
population in this community,
and it is really important to us
that we continue to value the
input of those community
members,” said Sharpe.
The
museum,
2145
Kingwood St. in Florence, is
open to the public Thursday
through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. For more information,

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
BART MEALER
Florence Food Share
As you may have heard, Florence Food Share has
an incredible garden that is maintained by an all-
volunteer task force. Now aff ectionately called Food
Share Farm, our garden is cared for on a daily basis
by our head gardener Bart Mealer.
Bart has been volunteering at Florence Food
Share since 2007, and we are quite certain he has the
greenest thumb on the West coast! Th anks to Bart,
our organic garden has grown to 15,000 square feet,
with two high tunnel greenhouses, a drip irrigation
system and a 10,000 gallon water catchment system
which cuts down on our city water usage.
Bart is quite knowledgeable in the rotation of
crops to optimize production and reduce pests, as
well as fertilization techniques that facilitate our
yearly production of over 10,000 lbs. of produce. Our
harvest regularly includes carrots, zucchini, winter
squash, tomatillos, bell peppers, tomatoes, eggplant,
caulifl ower, broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, kale, rainbow
chard, spinach, potatoes, onions, beets, pole beans,
snap peas, epazote and other herbs.
In addition, Bart is a dedicated Food Share Board
member, having just completed his term as President
and choosing to stay on to help in any capacity he
can. It is such a gift to have this talented man as an
integral part of the Food Share team. Th ank you,
Bart, for all you do!
