Although Stopher was not able
to take a sandboard with her to
Japan as planned, a lesson with
Cruz allowed her to describe a
beginner’s first attempt at some of
her meetings.
“This annual visit is an incredi-
ble opportunity to work with eco-
nomic development professionals
across the state to grow opportu-
nities for our local businesses and
communities,” Stopher said.
Most of the eight Oregon repre-
sentatives who attended the trip
were from the Portland metro
area.
“It’s good for the SCDC to take
these trips and represent the coast
on that level. It really shows our
progress,” Stopher said.
The Sand Master Park visit also
allowed Beale to talk to the
SCDC and Business Oregon rep-
resentatives about the industry
and innovations in his business.
“Sandboarding is becoming a
bigger and bigger issue world-
wide,” Henry said. “Lon has
some different ideas for Florence.
He has built this into a successful
venture and wants to become the
sandboarding capital of the
world.”
Sand Master Park will celebrate
its 20th annual Sand Master Jam
on Saturday, July 16, from 2 to
5:30 p.m.

Local ‘ham’ radio operators to have ‘Field Day’
Florence amateur “ham” radio oper-
ators will join thousands of amateur
radio operators worldwide to demon-
strate their effectiveness and profi-
ciency in providing critical communi-
cations this weekend, June 25 to 26.
Members of the Central Oregon
Coast
Amateur Radio Club
(COCARC) will establish three ama-
teur radio stations capable of commu-
nicating all over the Pacific Northwest
and the West Coast — and if condi-
tions are favorable, all over the world.
The club supports, maintains and
operates emergency communications
stations at the Florence Justice Center
and the Siuslaw Valley Fire and
Rescue main station, as well as
adjunct equipment in other facilities
in town, along with a powerful 2-
meter repeater at the top of Mt.
Herman Peak.
COCARC members will establish
and staff four amateur radio stations at
Sutton Campground in Group Area A
beginning at 11 a.m. today and will
operate continuously for 24 hours
until Sunday, June 26, at 11 a.m.
They will communicate with other
stations in Canada, the United States
and Oceania to test abilities, equip-
ment and practices. One station will
be a Get On The Air (GOTA) station
for public education and demonstra-
tion.
This will be an exciting education-
al experience for club members,
local fire and police department staff,
city staff and the community at-large.
Field Day is the largest amateur
radio event in the world. Last year,
more than 2,600 different groups and
more than 37,000 licensed operators
across the U.S. and Canada partici-
pated in this event. This year, ham
operators will construct emergency
radio stations at fire stations, parks,
shopping malls, schools and back-
yards all around the country.
The Central Oregon Amateur Radio
Club invites the public to participate in
Field Day 2016.
