internationally respected for
his work in the fields of isotope
geochemistry, cosmochemistry,
meteoritics and astrophysics.
Born in New Brunswick,
N.J., Wasserburg joined the
U.S. Army in 1944 and was a
private in the 23rd Infantry
Regiment, 2nd Division, that
liberated Czechoslovakia from
the Nazis.
After earning his Ph.D.
degree from the University of
Chicago in 1954, he joined the
faculty at Caltech as an assis-

became an associate professor
in 1959, professor of geology
and geophysics in 1963, and
MacArthur Professor in 1982.
He and his wife, Naomi,
began dividing their time

Florence in the late 1980s and

Association honored him with
its
“Outstanding
Citizen
Award” for his tireless efforts
to protect the water quality of
Woahink Lake.

grandchildren.
