Emeralds hold full stable of pitching prospects
EUGENE — The Eugene Emeralds,
which started their season last night at PK
Park, look to limit runs this season with a
variety of talented pitchers. The headlining
act on the mound for the Ems 2016 season
is second-year player, Dylan Cease, who is
rated as the second-best pitching prospect
in the Cubs organization.
Cease, who was drafted by the Cubs in
the sixth round of the 2014 MLB June
Amateur Draft behind former Ems Justin
Steele and Carson Sands, pitched 24
innings last year in the Arizona League.
He limited opponents to 12 hits and
seven earned runs, accumulating a 2.62
ERA and a WHIP of 1.167.
Cease was expected to be a first-round
draft after a stellar career at Milton High
School in Georgia. However, an injury to
his ulnar collateral ligament during his
senior year that required surgery caused
Cease to fall to the sixth round.
Byran Hudson, a 6’8” lefty, had few
chances to showcase his ability in games
last season for the Arizona League Cubs.
The southpaw had a 2.70 ERA and a WHIP
of 1.200 over six and two-thirds innings.
With his large frame, good fastball and
devastating breaking ball, the 19-year old
is set up for a great year on the mound for
the Emeralds.
One of the more unlikely signings,
Tommy Nance, turned heads while playing
for the Windy City Thunderbolts in the
Frontier League outside of Chicago. Nance
caught the Cubs’ attention with his large
stature and ability to shut down opponents
late in games.
Signed to a minor league contract,
Nance will start his journey to “The Show”
with the Emeralds.
The Eugene Emeralds are the short-sea-
son Class A team of the Chicago Cubs. In
2015, six of the top 30 Cubs prospects
spent time in Eugene, including Ian Happ,
Donnie Dewees and Eloy Jimenez.
With 61 years behind it, the Emeralds
are the longest-tenured and only founding
member remaining in the Northwest
League.
