Public asked not to release pet turtles into wild
ROSEBURG – A 10-pound
snapping turtle recently found
at
the Yoncalla Water
Treatment Plant is a good
reminder not to release pet tur-
tles into the wild. It’s illegal,
and it’s harmful for Oregon’s
two native turtles, the Western
Pond Turtle and Western
Painted Turtle.
Snapping turtles, red-eared
sliders, and map turtles are not
native to Oregon and are often
illegally bought, sold or traded
in the state. These are the most
common pet turtles but are pro-
hibited by law in Oregon
because they are invasive
species.
ODFW biologists say inva-
sive turtles compete with
Oregon’s native turtles for
food, basking sites and nesting
areas. Many grow bigger and
lay more eggs than native tur-
tles, and some even predate
upon them, hatchlings in par-
ticular.
Turtles can live 40 to 100
years, and are often released
Pick snappers up by the back of
their tail, not the sides — their
neck is long enough to swing
about half their body size.
This time of year, female tur-
tles are moving to nesting
areas. Rick Boatner, ODFW
Invasive Species Program
Manager has some advice.
“If you find a native turtle
crossing the road, pick it up
and put it on the side of the
road in the direction it was
heading,” Boatner said.

EUGENE — The Eugene
Emerald’s, a second-year affil-
iate of the Chicago Cubs, will
begin their season by hosting
the Boise Hawks on June 17,
at 7:05 p.m., in their home, PK
Park.
The team, which has been
as unlucky as its big league
affiliates, The Chicago Cubs,
are confident that this will be
their year. Fans can come out
to the ball park to help
“Reverse the Curse” and start
the season with a win.
The first 1,000 fans through
the Home Plate gate will
receive a special edition
“Reverse the Curse” T-shirt,
presented by Pepsi, and a 2016
playoff voucher.
Last year, the Ems failed to
reach the playoffs by only a
single game. The team hopes
to turn around its fortune this
season.
The opening game will be
the first chance for fans to see
the newest generation of the
Emeralds take the field. Fans
will also be encouraged to stay
after the game to watch a jam-
packed laser light show, pre-
sented by Pepsi.
During each home game,
the Emeralds will feature a
local nonprofit through the
Kendall Community Spotlight.
This program helps shine a
light on some of the nonprofits
in the Eugene and Springfield
area, and bring awareness to
all the hard work the organiza-
tions do on a daily basis.
For Opening Day, Alvord-
Taylor will be the Kendall
Community Spotlight. Alvord-
Taylor works to empower peo-
ple with intellectual and devel-
opmental disabilities to have
quality experiences at home, at
work and in the community.
To find out more, visit their
website or come see them on
the concourse at PK Park.
The Eugene Emeralds are
the short-season Class A team
of the Chicago Cubs. In 2015,
six of the top 30 Cubs
prospects spent time in
Eugene, including Ian Happ,
Donnie Dewees and Eloy
Jimenez.

Hi there, I’m Gage and I think I’m a pretty
happy guy. My life didn’t start out that great
though, I was tied outside for the fi rst couple
years of my life. I didn’t get to do much as a
young guy so now I’m a little apprehensive of
new situations. I love going to the beach though
or taking walks through the woods around the
shelter. Other dogs are pretty fun too but I don’t
like to share my toys or food. I really need a home
that understands this and is willing to work with
me and be patient. I’ve done some obedience
training and when I’m relaxed I do really well and
have a lot of fun. I can do sit, down, shake and I will
give you a great big teddy bear hug.
