camps begin

The Siuslaw Watershed
Council (SWC) is again
offering summer camps for
students entering fourth
grade through high school.
These camps are the perfect
way to get the most out of
summer.
Come be a part of explor-
ing the Siuslaw watershed’s
many rivers, streams and
lakes.
Camp dates are:
Introductory
Camp:
June 27-30, for students
entering grades 4-6
Intermediate Camp: July
11-14, for students entering
grades 6-8
Advanced Camp: July
18-22, for students entering
grades 8-12 with previous
watershed experience

warm water fish species is
good this time of year as
fish move to the shallows
for spawning. There are
numerous lakes in the
Florence area that can pro-
vide good opportunity and
have both boat and bank
access.

Siuslaw will join nearly 40 other
teams from around the region for
two days of junior baseball action.
ith the local AAA
Sandblasters team official-
ly off the schedule this sea-
son, the chance to catch some local
summer baseball action will be limit-
ed. But this weekend at Miller Park,
the boys of summer will be in full
swing during two days of junior base-
ball competition during the Siuslaw
Baseball Association’s annual Rick
and Corrine Gehlke Tournament.
As many as 40 teams from around
the region, including North Bend,
Marshfield and South Umpqua, will
field teams from multiple age groups
on all five fields. For Siuslaw fans and
future Vikings, it’s an opportunity to
get a glimpse of who to watch for dur-
ing the next Far West League baseball
season — as well as who to watch out
for.
In addition, there will be everything
from tee-ball to live pitching as play-
ers in all age groups step into the bat-
ter’s box and take to the field for

Cubs extend contract with Eugene Emeralds
EUGENE — The Chicago Cubs
agreed Tuesday with the Eugene
Emeralds on a two-year Player
Development Contract extension
through the 2018 season.
The current agreement had run
through the 2016 campaign.
“From first-class facilities to a dedi-
cated front office staff, the Eugene
ballclub has proved to be an outstand-
ing partner for the Cubs organization,
and we are pleased to extend this
agreement,” said Jason McLeod, the
Cubs Senior Vice President, Scouting
and Player Development. “We thank
Allan Benavides and the entire
Emeralds front office for providing a
positive experience for our players
who have come through Eugene.”
