NCAP works to protect communities, inspire solu-
tions and reduce pesticide use. Our health and com-
munities are worth protecting from harm. A healthy
climate, clean air, water and soil are incalculable in
their value to all of us. Without them our very sur-
vival is at risk. According to the Environmental
Protection Agency, more than 1 billion pounds of
pesticides are used annually in the United States.
This includes insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides,
fungicides and more. The phrase “Break the Billion”
h e Washed Ashore Project is a non-proi t, community-based
organization with a mission of educating and creating awareness
about marine debris and plastic pollution through art.
90% of the debris we collect is petroleum-based: plastic items,
nylon ropes and net. We are able to use 98% of this trash to create
sculptures, including a walk-through replica of an ocean gyre, a
Styrofoam coral reef, Henry the i sh, a plastic bottle sea jelly, an oil-
spill replica, and a musical sea star (tuned to an e-fl at scale!).
WASHEDASHORE.ORG
is a thread that runs through all of NCAP’s work. It
reminds us that everything we do, small or large, to
choose healthier alternatives over pesticides leads
to fewer pesticides used and less risk and harm
caused.
Oregon Coast Humane Society — New this
year, the Oregon Coast Humane Society (formerly
the Florence Area Humane Society) and Thrift Store
will be running a “Give and Take” event at the 2016
Florence Green Fair. You can donate small items,
such as books, DVDs/CDs, small furniture, appli-
ances, clothes, shoes, toys, etc. How it works: Bring
your unwanted items to the Florence Events Center
beginning at 10 a.m. We will tag your item with a
value and give you a voucher for that amount. Find
another item of equal or lesser value and give it a
new home. No cash refunds; this is a simple
exchange. You may find an item valued at more than
your voucher, and in that case you would pay the dif-
ference. All proceeds and leftover items will be
donated to the OCHS Thrift Store.
Oregon State Parks — Park Rangers will have an
electric car on display at the Green Fair. Everyone is
encouraged to stop by and learn about it. The whole
family will also be able to create a Terrarium from recy-
cled items to be taken home. We are family friendly and
look forward to a fun day of learning. Oregon State
Parks booth is sponsored by Pest Tech Inc.
