Adaptive Seeds — Sarah Kleeger and Andrew Still
both grew up in Southern California surrounded by con-
crete. They met in college and started working on
organic farms together in 2003, driven by a desire to
reconnect with and help restore the natural world. In
2006-07, they started the Seed Ambassadors Project,
traveling, sharing and collecting seeds in Northern and
Eastern Europe. In 2009, they established Adaptive
Seeds and moved to Open Oak Farm in Sweet Home,
Ore. Adaptive Seeds stewards rare, diverse and
resilient seed varieties for ecologically minded farmers,
gardeners and seed savers. Most of our seed is adapt-
ed to the Pacific Northwest and other short season
northern climates.We sell only public domain, open pol-
linated seed, as well as many diverse gene-pool mixes.
All of our seed is grown by either us or a few regional
friends who help with isolation needs.

posting and recycling. Lofy Construction, the top busi-
ness nomination, recycles anything possible from their
job sites, including cardboard, wood products, paper
and metals. Remodel jobs reuse lumber by taking it to
Habitat for Humanity Restore. Demolition projects get
recycled by taking concrete and brush to Sand Rand for
repurposing as fill material and composting. Florence
Food Share, the top community organization, composts
around 100 pounds of spoiled produce monthly from
local suppliers, reuses produce and egg boxes and
plastic bags, uses a rainwater catchment system for
their gardens, installed thermostats and changed
reusable dishware. Siuslaw Genealogical Society also
received recognition for providing recycling opportuni-
ties for cell phones, small electronics, toner and ink jet
cartridges. Oregon Coast Humane Society Thrift Store
recycles cardboard, bags and newspaper packaging
