OBITUARIES
WHITE—Joyce Lorraine
White, 72, passed away May
17, 2016, in
Florence.
She will be
laid to rest
during the
summer in
Albion,
Idaho, next
to her father.
Joyce was
Joyce White
born
in
Alexandria, La., to Lelia and
James Snodgrass on Sept. 4,
1943.
She married Henry Thomas
White on Sept. 6, 1961, in
Jerome, Idaho, and a few years
later they moved to Florence,
where Joyce lived until she
passed away. Together, they had
three children: Sheryl, James
and Thomas.
She loved the outdoors, hunt-
ing, fishing and her favorite
place to camp was Lost Lake on
the Santiam pass.
Joyce and Tom owned the
Krab Kettle seafood market but
in her younger years and later in
life she worked as a waitress.
She is survived by her chil-
dren: Sheryl and Jerry Phillips,
Jim and Michelle White and
Tom and Shalon White; seven
grandchildren and their spous-
es: Jeri Lynn (Phillips) and Kyle
Busenitz, Katie (Phillips) and
Cameron Burke, Devin and
Courtney White, Lindsey and
Marika White, Kiera and Rhian
Hollister; three great-grandchil-
dren: Kyler and Gracie
Busenitz and Sutton Burke; and
her
brother,
James
L.
Snodgrass.

WHITE—Gerald L. “Jerry”
White, 77, of Florence, son of
Pearl and William White of
New Castle,
Pa., passed
away May
11, 2016.
J e r r y
p a s s e d
away after a
short battle
with cancer
and will be Gerald White
missed by
all who knew him.
He was a member of the
Florence Elks and Siuslaw
Friendship Club. He worked 33
years for the Los Angeles
Deptartment of Water and
Power as an electrical lineman.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting,
coaching sports, and camping,
but mostly playing with his
sons.
He was a veteran of the U.S.
Army, with an honorable dis-
charge.
Jerry and Jean were married
almost 57 years.
He is survived by his wife,
Jean, of Florence; his sister,
Judith Bartberger, of New
Castle, Pa.; and three sons:
Mark of Los Angeles, Ca., (wife
Bernice), Alan of Fort Mohave,
Ariz., (wife Wendy) and Kevin
of Laughlin, Nev.; seven grand-
children: Dayna, Sally-Jean,
Tawni, Tyler, Torey, Elliana and
Harrison; and five great-grand-
children: Seth, Jaedin, Kylee,
Rylie and Tucker.
There will be a memorial
service at Florence Elks Lodge
#1858, 1686 12th St., in
Florence, on Sunday, June 12,
from 2 to 4 p.m.
He formerly drove the cancer
bus to Eugene and the DAV van
to Portland. Contributions can
be made in his name to support
69th ANNIVERSARY
the cancer bus: “Friends of
Florence,” P.O. Box 598,
Florence, OR 97439.
Jerry’s wishes were to be cre-
mated and he will be laid to rest
in Pacific Sunset Cemetery in
Florence.

OSTROM —Sumner
William “Bill” Ostrom, 97, for-
merly
of
Florence,
passed away
April
12,
2016.
Bill was
born Feb. 4,
1919,
to
M a s t e r
S e r g e a n t Bill Ostrom
Sumner and
Lola Ostrom at Ft. Columbia,
Wash. Master Sergeant Sumner
was in charge of search lights at
the mouth of the Columbia
River.
After the war, the family
moved to Milwaukie, Ore.,
where Bill graduated from
Milwaukie High School in
1936. He then attended Oregon
State College, married his high
school sweetheart and joined
the U.S. Army Air Corps.
He always loved adventure,
the Oregon coast, fishing, clam-
ming, bowling, boating, RVing
and “Jinx” (Norma), to whom
he was married for 68 years
until her death in 2010.
Bill managed the Lower
Columbia River Bowl in
Astoria, Ore., before starting
the Trophy Case in Warrenton,
Ore. After retiring, Bill and Jinx
moved to Florence, where they
enjoyed life and many friends.
Their second retirement
found them again in Warrenton,
and then Seaside, Ore., and
Neawanna By The Sea, where
Bill remained until his death.
Bill was a giver. If there was
a need, he wrote a check. His
many friends remember a man
who always gave a smile, a kind
word and always had a humor-
ous story to tell.
He loved a good discussion.
Bill is survived by his two
daughters: Nancy Hopp of
Gearheart, Ore., and Patricia
Beyer of Milwaukie, Ore; six
grandchildren and 13 great-
grandchildren.
A family memorial celebra-
tion will be held July 4 at the
mouth of the Columbia River.
MEAD—Ronald Mead, 82,
formerly of Mapleton, passed
away Tuesday, May 25, 2016,
in Lebanon, Ore.
He was born Feb. 19, 1934,
to Herbert J. and Elizabeth
Mead. He attended school in
Mapleton, Ore.
Ron served four years in the
U.S. Navy, from 1951 to 1955,
and served on the U.S.S. Bryce
Canyon in Japan. He worked
most of his life as a heavy
equipment operator in the log-
ging industry.
He is survived by his chil-
dren: Karen Cromwell (Monty),
Peggy Sue Thompson (Marty),
Barbara Westercamp (Mark),
Paula Carrigan (Brandon),
Randy Mead (Pam) and many
grandchildren.
A memorial service is
planned for this summer.
CAPORALE—David A.
Caporale, 67, of Florence,
passed away May 30, 2016.
Arrangements are being held
through Burns’s Riverside
Chapel Florence Funeral Home.

Florence and Russell Riggs
of Florence are celebrating 69
years of marriage today, June
4, 2016.
The two were married June
4, 1947, in Salton, Wash., the
night after Russell graduated
from high school.
Russell’s family was from
Salton; Florence’s was from
Aberdeen, Wash.
The two moved to Florence
in 1952 and have lived on
Second Street ever since.

Middle School on Saturday,
June 4, to conduct an active
shooter response exercise.
The exercise will conclude
around 2 p.m.
The exercise is not open to
the public and citizens are
asked to avoid the area dur-
ing the exercise.
The exercise will be pri-
marily centered on Oak
Street and through traffic will
be restricted in the area.
Citizens may also hear
drill communication over
emergency response radio
frequencies until 3 p.m.
Normal
emergency
response operations and hos-
pital operations will not be
affected by the drill.
