Steelhead
Steelhead fishing is slow
but the summer steelhead
run is underway. This run
typically peaks by early
July but fish can be found
throughout the mainstem at
any time now. Casting
spinners, drifting bait or
using a bobber and jig can
be effective.
Cover water and fish
small and simple as the
river conditions are low
and clear.
Cutthroat trout opened
May 22 and can offer
anglers of all experience
levels good opportunity.

nized for
their efforts this past school
year. Over the course of the
last three sports seasons, 27
new school records and 14
individual district and state
champions were named
between Siuslaw and
Mapelton high schools.
Among those athletes
were 13 finalists for Athlete
of the Year: Preston

ing student athletes who
have contributed so much
of themselves all year,” said
KCST news director Bob
Sneddon. “Deciding on the
best of the best this year
was no exception.
“All of these athletes
played a major role in their
teams’ successes while, at
the same time, accomplish-
ing their own achievements
in atheltics as well as aca-
demics.
“We’re proud to have this
chance to recognize these
outstanding student ath-
letes.”
At the close of last night’s
awards ceremony, which
included desserts prepared
by Siuslaw High School
culinary students and
served by members of the
school’s PRIDE program,
Siuslaw seniors Mikaela
Siegel and Kenneth Thrall
were named the 2016
Athletes of the Year.
