Winners announced for Expressions West 2016

OOS BAY — In conjunction with
the opening of the Expressions
West 2016 exhibition, juror Leslie
Kenneth Price announced his selection of
prize winners in this 13 state painting
competition.
The First Place Prize was awarded to
Claire Duncan of Ashland, Ore., for her
acrylic painting “Dark Exposure.”
Second place was presented to
Georgiana Nehl of Portland, Ore., for her
gouache and oil wrok titled “Circlet.”
David Carmack Lewis of Portland,
Ore., received third place award for his oil
painting “Four Studies of Coal — Fired
Power Plant, Boardman, Ore.”
The three top prize awards were $1,000
for first place, $750 for second place and
$250 for third place.
Honorable Mention and Entry of Merit
awards were also announced. The four
Honorable Mention recipients are: Ellery
J. Akers of San Francisco, Calif., for “The
Life of Plants,” watercolor; Patricia Cink
of Bandon, Ore., for “Johnson Creek
Mist,” pastel; Katlyn Hubner of Olalla,
Wash., for “Wash Closet Club,” oil and
acrylic; and Annell Livingston of El
Prado, N.M., for “Fragments Geometry &
Change #218,” gouache.
Entry of Merit awards went to: Tony
Adams of North Bend, Ore.; Scott Berger
of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Margarita
Chaplinska of Roseville, Calif.; Patricia
Cink of Bandon, Ore.; Mei-Ying
Dell’Aquila of Santa Clara, Calif.; Dick
Evans of Santa Fe, N.M.; Mimi Cernyar
Fox of Raymond, Wash.; Cora Larson of
Myrtle Creek, Ore.; Karen Purdy of
Petaluma, Calif.; Patricia Renner of Gold
Beach, Ore.; and Christine Zachary of
Portland, Ore.
Expressions West is now in its 20th
year and remains one of the premier exhi-
bitions held annually at Coos Art
Museum. This year’s exhibition runs
through June 25.
The exhibit’s juror, Leslie Kenneth
Price, is a retired painting professor from
Arcata, Calif. After attending the High
School of the Arts in Manhattan and later
earning an art degree at The Pratt Institute,
Brooklyn, N.Y., Price moved to Oakland,
Calif., in 1971 to attend graduate school at
Mills College.
Then followed a 30-year teaching
career at Humboldt State University.
Among his solo exhibitions are: Piante
Gallery, Eureka, Calif.; Kimpton Gallery,
San Francisco, Calif.; and Morris Graves
Museum, Eureka, Calif.
He has participated in group exhibitions
at: Edward Hopper Art Center, Nyack,
N.Y.; Museum of African Diaspora, San
Francisco, Calif.; and DiCirico Museum,
Volos, Greece.
Price’s own paintings are also on dis-
play at the museum in the Mabel Hansen
Gallery.
His one-person exhibition A Garden
Conversation runs consecutively with
Expressions West.
Coos Art Museum hours are 10 a.m. to
4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 1 to 4
p.m. on Saturday.
