‘Based on a True Story’
returning to FEC in June
“Based on a True Story”
(“BOATS”) is the Last Resort
Players upcoming show set
for June 17 and 18 at the
Florence Events Center.
First presented two seasons
ago,
“BOATS”
proved
extremely popular with audi-
ences, who enjoyed listening
to true stories (or slightly
embellished) that were also
poignant,
laugh-out-loud-
funny, provocative and in
some cases life changing.
The storytellers are local
friends, relatives, teachers,
city councilors, pastors and
restaurant servers.
Between stories, Debra

ance, picture taking is
encouraged, not prohibited.
Informality and good stories
are the theme of the evening.
This flat floor production
has table seating with food
and drinks available for pur-
chase.
The program begins at 7
p.m. on Friday, June 17, and
Saturday, June 18.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $15 at the FEC
box office, 715 Quince St. or

Local photographer captures images, video
of an orca swimming in the Siuslaw River
O
n Saturday around 5:30 p.m. Deborah
Heldt Cordone and other onlookers
observed an orca breaching in the Siuslaw
River near the North Jetty dive area. “The orca was a
sight to behold and I was able to get video,” Cordone
said. “This orca arrived a year after the last big orca
sighting after the Rhody parade day last year.”
According to Cordone, the orca was large and had a
tall and straight dorsal fin and tail characteristics of a
male. Cordone also captured images of a small fishing
boat near the whale. Her video of the sighting can be
found at www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tb0EAWfxvCA.

Dave’s Weekly Garden Tip
• Fertilize lawns with one pound of nitrogen per 1000
square feet; water in after application.
• Cut back azaleas and rhododendrons after blooms if too
tall, thin out weak branches. Remember that pruning will
result in no blooms on that branch next year.
• Watch for fl ea beetles on cole crops; remove by hand or
spray with an approved insecticide.
