C ELEBRATE PEACE AT ‘A WAKENING ’
The third annual “Awakening Peace”
event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3
p.m., at the Recreational Meeting Hall
at Honeyman State Park.
The purpose of the event is to reflect
on and experience peace, individually
and collectively.
Featured artists include the Indian
Education Program drummers and
dancers, poets Noah Schultz and
Stephen Fowler, singer Jeff Lovejoy,
flautist Bruce Jarvis and Stephen Pierce
of “Dances for Peace International.”
There will also be craft activities and
snacks; bring your own lunch.
There is no charge and everyone is
welcome to attend.
Monday, May 30
P IONEER MEMORIAL AT D EADWOOD
A special Memorial Day service will
be held at the Deadwood Pioneer
Cemetery, just north of Highway 36 on
Deadwood Creek Road, beginning at
noon.
Hear about Civil War and Oregon his-
tory. David Burkett of the Sons of the
Union Veterans of the Civil War, and
Tami Dreiling, will provide pioneer
reenactments and storytelling, and Ken
Sawyer will bring his Civil War and
Native American memorabilia.
The community is invited.
There will also be free hot dogs, chili,
cookies and bottled water. Potluck items
for salads and desserts are welcome.
Elks Lodge, 1686 12th St.
At 11 a.m., the Florence American
Legion, along with the Veterans of
Foreign Wars, are hosting a Memorial
Day service at Veteran’s Memorial Park
located on Bay Street. The local U.S.
Coast Guard will perform a wreath-
laying ceremony on the river.
At 1 p.m., there will be a VFW dedi-
cation of a new flag pole and veterans
memorial at the Florence cemetery.
A shuttle will be available at 12:30
p.m. at the lodge to take people to the
cemetery for the 1 p.m. service and
dedication.
LCC CLOSED FOR HOLIDAY
Lane Community College will be
closed for the Memorial Day holiday.
No classes will be held and no servic-
es will be available, unless otherwise
announced by a department or program.

The monthly meeting and luncheon
for the Florence Van Fans will be held
at The Shorewood on Spruce Street at
11:45 a.m.
The group will be planning its annual
Ice Cream Social and is always looking
for new members. It’s free to join Van
Fans. All help is appreciated.
