The Florence Kiwanis Club recently donated a new, custom-designed bus stop
bench at the main entrance of the Siuslaw Public Library on Ninth Street for pub-
lic convenience. Old Cedar Tree Woodworking on Highway 101 constructed the
bench, which was installed by River Cities Taxi, operators of the fixed-route Rhody
Express public transit system in Florence. Plans are now underway for Kiwanis to
donate two more similar benches for installation at Peace Harbor Medical Center
and on Eighth Street. Contact River Cities Taxi or the City of Florence for timeta-
bles and more information regarding the community’s Rhody Express transporta-
tion service.

Entrepreneurs share tales at Fireside Chat
The startup life is full of ups
and downs. And next week,
three veteran entrepreneurs
from the Willamette Valley
will share their personal
roller-coaster stories with the
Startup Florence Coast com-
munity.
Founders’ Fireside Chat
will be held Wednesday, June
1, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ocean
Dunes Golf Links, 3345
Munsel Lake Road. The event
is free to attend. Light food
and beverage will be served.
For more information,
including registration, go to
bit.ly/FloCo_FiresideChat.
The speakers include:
Katie Brown — Founder,
katiebrownla.com: A serial
entrepreneur who has built
several food and beverage
businesses and is now in the
fashion apparel industry. She
launched her line, Katie
Brown L.A., over a year ago
and has had sales across the
nation. She will share her
story about balancing family
and entrepreneurship, as well
as what it’s like building a
high-growth fashion line in
Eugene.
Derek Schloss — Co-
Founder, cowbucker.com: An
entrepreneur who launched a
line of hats with classmates
while attending the University
of Oregon. They have since
landed accounts all over the
country. Derek will share his
entrepreneurial
journey,
including his experience
going through the RAIN
Eugene accelerator, and how
he and his co-founders are
ramping up to raise more cap-
ital to grow.
Todd Edman — Founder,
Waitrainer.com: Waitrainer is
a software that simplifies
training and increases staff
and customer retention in the
restaurant industry. Todd is
also the former CEO/Owner
of Lunar Logic, a software
development firm in Eugene.
Todd will share what it was
like to spin-out a new soft-
ware application from Lunar
Logic, as well as what it was
like going through the RAIN
Eugene Accelerator.
“These are three successful
entrepreneurs, but I think peo-
ple will find them very relat-
able, and that the milestones
they’ve reached while build-
ing businesses — making
sales, raising capital and hir-
ing employees — are realistic
goals for many of the early
entrepreneurs
here
in
Florence,” said Caroline
Cummings, Venture Catalyst
for Oregon RAIN.
This event is part of the new
entrepreneurial movement,
Startup
Florence
Coast
(#StartupFloCo), launched by
RAIN and the City of
Florence in late 2015.
“Founders’ Fireside Chat is
our 10th Startup Florence
Coast event. It’s remarkable
how quickly this community
has grown, both in terms of its
size and its grasp of entrepre-
neurship. In many ways this
next event is a capstone for
everything we’ve done so far
because it brings in so many
concepts that we’ve looked at
in separate events: inspira-
tion, education, mentoring
and industry,” said Kelli
Weese, Florence Economic
Development coordinator.
The Regional Accelerator
and Innovation Network
(RAIN) is an Oregon consor-
tium of government, higher
education, and the business
community. RAIN was found-
ed by the State of Oregon’s
Regional Solutions network
and funded by the 77th
Oregon State Legislative
Assembly to advance the for-
mation of high-growth inno-
vative startup companies
located in Lane, Linn, Benton
and Lincoln counties.
