More than 150 jars of
peanut butter totaling 390
pounds were collected last
week at Johnston Motor
Company for the Florence
Food Share Pantry.
The donations were made
by local residents during the
Northwest Ford dealer’s
peanut butter drive May 12-
21.
A highly desirable staple,
peanut butter is expensive
and difficult for emergency
pantries to acquire in quan-
tities needed during the
summer months. KCST
Radio, Northwest Ford and
Johnston Motor Company
teamed up to raise the much
needed protein for Florence
Food Share.

Chat with RAIN founders June 1
Caroline Cummings, ven-
ture catalyst with RAIN
(Regional Accelerator and
Innovation Network), is excit-
ed to return to Florence on
Wednesday, June 1, from 5 to 7
p.m., for the “Founders
Fireside Chat” at the Oregon
Dunes Golf Links, 3345
Munsel Lake Road. This event
is free to attend, and the City of
Florence and RAIN will pro-
vide refreshments.
Present and future entrepre-
neurs, supporters, mentors
and investors can RSVP to
the
event
at
www.
meetup.com/Startup-Florence-
Oregon-Coast/.
“We have a fun and educa-
tional evening planned for
you,” Cummings said. “This
time we have three Founders
(entrepreneurs) sitting fireside
to share their entrepreneurial
stories with you and to answer
your questions.”
The Founders are:
Katie Brown, a serial
entrepreneur who has built sev-
eral food and beverage busi-
nesses and is now in the fash-
ion apparel industry. She
launched her line, Katie Brown
L.A., over a year ago and is
selling her line across the
nation. She will share her story
about how she integrates her
work and life, as well as what
it’s like building a high growth
fashion line in Eugene, Ore.
Find more information at
katiebrownla.com.
Derek Schloss, co-founder
of cowbucker.com, a line of
hats, with his University of
Oregon classmates while in
college. They have since land-
ed accounts all over the coun-
try and are growing fast.
Schloss will share his entrepre-
neurial journey, including how
he and his co-founders are
ramping up to raise more capi-
tal to grow. He will also share
the impact of going through the
RAIN Eugene Accelerator.
Todd Edman founded
Waitrainer, a software that sim-
plifies training and increases
staff and customer retention in
the restaurant industry. Edman
is also the former CEO/Owner
of Lunar Logic, a software
development firm in Eugene.
He will share what it was like
to spin-out a new software
company from Lunar Logic as
well as what it was like going
through the RAIN Eugene
Accelerator. Find more infor-
mation at waitrainer.com.

• Foamy spittle bugs on plant stems look unsightly but do
not harm plants. Wash off with water or use insecticidal
soap if desired.
• Cut off and remove new growth of undesirable shrubs such
as salal and blackberries. Wait until leaves have hardened
off in mid-summer to spray with herbicides.
