Jim Grano hands Siuslaw Public Library Director Meg Spencer a check for $270. Grano gave the money to the library
on behalf of himself and his two brothers in honor of their 89-year-old mother, Spruce Point resident Jane Borras.
The brothers donated the money to purchase 54 fiction and nonfiction large-print books in their mother’s name. “We
were able to purchase the books for just $5 each. It was a wonderful coincidence of timing,” said Spencer. According
to Grano, each brother agreed to give $90 in honor of their mother’s 90th birthday in June.

has a safe, secure and enjoy-
able recreational boating expe-
rience this season. While
enjoying the Siuslaw River,
Pacific Ocean, local lakes and
other nearby recreational
waterways, boaters (including
the paddle craft community)
are encouraged to always wear
their appropriate life jacket
and understand navigation
rules.
In the State of Oregon, all
boaters who operate a motor-
boat over 10 horsepower are
required to take an approved
boating safety course and carry
a boater education card
onboard. A variety of paddling
education courses are also
available in Lane County.
Port of Siuslaw Manager
Steven
Leskin
reminds
boaters, “The river is for
everyone and it is responsible
WEDNESDAY THURSDAY
to follow boating etiquette.”
Paddle sports, which include
kayaks, canoes and paddle
boarders, is a quickly growing
activity. Leskin requests that
“motorized vessels respect
paddlers and give them a wide
berth and reduced wake.”
To help the public embrace
the wearing of life jackets and
safe boating, there are two
events this month:
May 20: Wear Your Life
Jacket to Work Day. A fun way
to heighten awareness of differ-
ent life jacket styles and
demonstrate their comfort and
versatility by wearing them to
work. Participants can take a
picture of themselves wearing
their life jacket while at work
and post it to Coast Guard
Station
Siuslaw
River’s
Facebook page.
May 21: Life Jacket World
Record Day. Thousands of peo-
ple from around the world will
attempt to set the world record
for the most life jackets worn in
one day. Station Siuslaw River
invites people to participate in
this event at the Coast Guard
Station off Rhododendron
Drive. This Saturday, from 9 to
9:30 a.m., you may come to the
station with your life jacket,
sign a form as a participant and
have your photo taken. To be
part of breaking the world
record, you must be present
during that time period.
For more information about
either event or to have your
photo taken at work wearing a
life jacket, contact Deborah
