Program in Yachats to
focus on ‘The Big One’
YACHATS — The Yachats
Academy of Arts and Sciences
is collaborating with the
University of Oregon to pres-
ent Dr. Leland O’Driscoll and
Krista Dillon for a program
regarding the possibility of a
major earthquake happening
just off of the Oregon coast.
The program titled “Are
You Ready for the Big One?”
will be Saturday, May 20,
beginning at 6:30 p.m., at the
Yachats Commons.
Dr O’Driscoll is a professor
at U of O and is manager o the
Earthquake Early Warning
project and Seismic Field
Technician, as well as a mem-
ber of the U of O’s Pacific
Northwest Seismic Network
(PNSN).
Dr. O’Driscoll, a U of O
researcher and expert on the
Cascadia Subduction Zone,
will talk about the geology
behind earthquakes and the
West
Coast
Earthquake
Warning System.
Krista Dillon, with the U of
O’s Emergency Management
and Continuity Program, will
discuss what citizens can do to
be prepared for such an event.
There is no admission
charge for this presentation,
but a $5 donation can help
defray publicity expenses.

Painting pooch featured at Hideaway Gallery
Hideaway Gallery is
hosting local canine
artist “Tru the painting
dog” through May. Her
preferred medium is
working with acrylics.
Tru’s joy and love
for children has given
her a desire to help
enrich their lives. In
February, she donated
an original piece of art-
work to Fraudville,
which is a fundraiser
for the Boys and Girls
Club.
Her
piece
was
included in the live
auction.
Recently, Tru has
developed a new and
exciting skill finding
truffles, which she
donates to Siuslaw
High School’s culinary

arts program. Recently,
the truffles were used
at the VIP reception at
Florence
Events
Center’s “Splash Off”
of Dancing with Sea
Lions.
In keeping with her
art contributions, Tru
has also created a spe-
cial piece for the silent
auction for 2016 Bark
For Life, an American
Cancer Society event.
In addition, Tru will be
demonstrating
her
Trick Dog talents at the
event June 11 at Miller
Park.
Watch for Tru in the
Rhododendron Parade
on May 22, when she
will be walking with
the Bark for Life float.
The Summer Box Social
offers anyone and everyone
the opportunity to take
Backstreet Galler’s annual art
challenge. The finished pieces
will be exhibited at the gallery
during July in the Summer
Box Social: American Spirit as
we celebrate Independence
Day.
Here’s the catch: the boxes
are round.
Yardumian
featured for
Nye Beach
series
YACHATS

Yardumian is a talented
musician as well as a fiction
writer. He was born in
California and enjoyed a live-
ly suburban boyhood.
He will read Saturday,
May 21, beginning at 7 p.m.,
at the Nye Beach Writers
Series in the Nye Beach
Visual Arts Center.
Everyone is welcome.
An open mic for local writ-
ers will follow the presenta-
tion.
General admission is $8;
students are admitted free.
Falling in love with music
in his teens, Yardumian spent
ten years working in the
music field, including man-
aging editor of Cash Box
magazine and creative direc-
tor for Burt Bacharach’s
music publishing company.
His most enjoyable stint
came as director of marketing
for I.R.S. Records, the label
that represented world artists
like R.E.M., the Go-Gos and
the Buzzcocks.
In the mid-90s Yardumian
left the music industry and
began writing fiction. What
makes his work interesting is
how he combines words and
music.
While writing “The Sound
of Songs Across the Water,”
Yardumian produced a com-
panion CD. The book expos-
es readers to the creative
process while the companion
CD demonstrates the realities
of making music. Both are
proactive and entertaining,
“crafting a haunting and
sharply-focused tale of
melody, lust and the ghosts
we can’t outrun” says the
book cover.
Protective of his writing
time, Yardumian balances
writing with being a father
and living in Portland, Ore.,
where he enjoys interacting
with other writers.
His short fiction has
appeared in The Southern
Review,
The
Antioch
Review, The New Orleans
Review and other literary
magazines.

There is an opportunity for
members of the Florence
Regional
Arts
Alliance
(FRAA) to submit ideas and
get their art noticed while help-
ing support a vital cause in the
Florence community.
The annual “Empty Bowls”
Event, held at the Florence
Events Center, is one of the
biggest fundraisers for the
Florence Food Share each year.
In addition to the many
beautiful pieces of pottery auc-
tioned off or sold at the event,
there will also be a special
piece of artwork that will be
featured on posters and raffled
off.
This is usually a 2-dimen-
sional painting or drawing that
reflects the importance and
beauty of feeding others.
The chosen artist’s name
will be featured in numerous
public service announcements
and the work will be shown at
locations throughout Florence
as the raffle takes place.
This is open to FRAA mem-
bers only and the work that is
submitted must be in pdf or jpg
files to be accepted.
There is no cash award and
the winning artist relinquishes
all rights to their work.
All submissions will be for
the “Empty Bowls Event” and
FRAA will also be accepting
submissions for the Oregon
Public Bank (OPB) project at
the same time.
Submit a proposed design to
the Florence Regional Arts
Alliance no later than May 31.
Arists can also submit samples
of work along with their design
in jpg file formats.
A selection will be made by
June 10, and the winning art
piece will need to be completed
by Aug. 1.
