Sixth annual Power of Florence gearing up for July
The sixth annual Power of
Florence, a city-wide day ded-
icated to volunteering and giv-
ing back, will be held this year
on July 16. The day, officially
proclaimed by the Florence
City Council, was started six
years ago by Kaylee Graham,
now 16 years old.
“I envisioned this day to
be like the Rhododendron
Festival, with events happen-
ing all around Florence,” says
Graham. “Only this day, all of
the events help make a differ-
ence for our community by
fundraising, collecting items
for the needy or beautifying
our community.”
Over the course of five
years, the Power of Florence
has had more than 6,000 par-
ticipants, 69 service projects
have been completed, about
$36,400 has been raised for
nonprofits in our area, and
more than 12,000 pounds of

food has been collected for
Florence Food Share and

Many organizations already
have plans to be a part of this
year’s Power of Florence. As
always, the day will officially
start with a “Power Walk”
along the streets of Old Town
Florence.

A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING
The United Methodist
Church will be hosting its
annual pancake breakfast, and
“The Party in the Parking Lot”
will again take place in the
Grocery Outlet parking lot.
There will be live music and
entertainment, as well as a bar-
becue hosted by the Florence
Area Humane Society.
CROW will be hosting its
car wash fundraiser and many
people already have plans to
beautify areas around our com-
munity.
There is still time for indi-
viduals or organizations to get
involved and make a differ-
ence.
Everyone in the community
is encouraged to get out and
make a difference, either by
attending the events that sup-
port volunteering or by creat-
ing and hosting a fundraiser or
community service project.
Businesses can participate
by simply donating a small
portion of their profits for the
day to a nonprofit of their
choice; Relay for Life teams
can plan a fundraising event for
this day, and nonprofits can
plan events to help benefit their
agency.
Anyone is welcome to plan
an event or fundraiser if it is
benefiting others in the com-
munity.

Fluid Levels: There are lots of things to check but
don’t skip over any of them: engine oil, transmission
fluid, brake fluid, antifreeze/coolant and, yes, even
windshield washer fluid. Commonly a brake fluid
flush can get your sluggish brakes working as
good as new and because this is recommended
once a year there is no better time to get it done.
