4-H helps Siuslaw
Regional Aquatics Center
On and before April 9,
the
Mapleton
4-H
Community Club took
part in a service project to
support the efforts to raise
money for the Siuslaw
Regional Aquatics Center
in Mapleton.
The entire club created
centerpieces for the din-
ner and auction held at
the Florence Elks Lodge.
The centerpieces were
used for flowers, and then
were dispersed through-
out the community as
donation jars.
The members voted
for this project with
hope that their efforts
will help raise funds for
the repair and reopening
of the Mapleton Pool,
now
known
as
the Siuslaw Regional
Aquatics Center.

n March, the kindergarten class at Mapleton
Elementary School challenged all the classes to
bring 100 cans of food by the 100th day of school.
The students were hoping to be able to donate 400
cans of food to the Mapleton Food Share. Much to
our surprise, all the classes surpassed the challenge
of 100 cans and we were able to donate 1,104 cans of
food. Our kindergarten class would like to thank
anyone in our community that donated and helped
our food drive be such a huge success. Thank you!

Students win with Box Tops PTA attends leadership conference
Four
delegates
from
Florence Community PTA
attended the annual Oregon
PTA Leadership Conference
and Convention in April at the
Hilton Conference Center in
Eugene. This year’s conven-
tion theme was “Be Here, Be
Heard,” which emphasizes the
PTA’s strong voice in advocat-
ing for children and youth
locally, throughout Oregon and
across the nation.
Convention
activities
included the annual business
meeting, election of state offi-
cers, workshops on a variety of
topics around education and
the well-being of children,
awards and leadership dinners,
and the annual Reflections Art
awards luncheon. A slate of fun
activities throughout the week-
end kept the atmosphere light.
The weekend’s keynote
speaker was Donald Dunn,
National PTA Board of
Directors representative. Dunn
is the chairman of the North
Carolina State PTA Mail

Committee,
serves on the Winston-
Salem/Forsyth County PTA
Council, is a member of the
Forsyth Education Partnership
and is on the Council for the
Accreditation of Educator
Preparation. Dunn also led and
participated in various work-

Elementary School in March.
“This is the time of year when we rake in
large amounts of Box Tops to raise money for
the Siuslaw Schools,” said Box Tops
Coordinator Jennifer Wilks. “The kids have
fun watching their classroom scores go up
during the two weeks that Box Tops are col-
lected.”

A total of 17,744 Box Tops were counted
in and sent to the Box Tops for Education

made by U.S. Senator Ron
Wyden for the Reflections Arts
luncheon held on Saturday. His
message stressed the impor-
tance of making sure that equal
educational opportunities are
made available to all students.
The president of Florence
Community PTA, Diane
McCalmont, was elected to the
Oregon State Board position of
Region 6 Director at this year’s
convention. Region 6 encom-
passes local PTA units in Lane
and
Douglas
counties.
McCalmont will serve as a
leader and liaison, and provide
training to local PTA units.
“I’m honored to join the
Oregon State PTA Board of
Directors, and am excited to
begin work helping local PTAs
be the best they can be in sup-
porting children and education
in their communities,” said
McCalmont.
Florence Community PTA
will hold their last general
meeting of the 2015-16 school
year on Tuesday, May 17. The
public is invited to attend to
hear about programs and
school related topics. An elec-
tion of board officers for 2016-
17 will also be held. Childcare
and refreshments will be pro-
vided.
