Hayward Field in Eugene
played host to some of the
regions best college and high
school
athletes
during
Saturday’s Oregon Relays,
with a dozen members of the
Viking track team qualifying
to compete among athletes
from more than 50 high
schools schools.
By the end of the two-day
invitational, junior thrower
Carissa Oliver had the
Vikings’ highest individual
finish after throwing a per-
sonal record of 124 feet, 11
inches in the discus for fifth
place overall.
Oliver also landed 11th in
the shot put with a mark of 36
feet, 8.25 inches.

While Vikings fans took their seats
for Saturday’s “makeup” softball
game against Brookings, which had
been rained out after half an inning
last week, the Bruins loaded the bases
and took a 3-0 lead before Siuslaw’s
Heidi Jones threw her first pitch.
In a sense, Saturday’s game was
like returning to a pre-empted game
already in progress.
“We talked a lot about that heading
into the game, and how we needed to
shake off coming into a game already

down by three runs and with the bases
loaded,” said Siuslaw coach Sean
O’Mara. “The girls did a great job of
staying focused and not letting that
situation get into their heads.”
By the time the Lady Vikings got to
the plate in the bottom of the inning,
they were in a 6-0 deficit.

Vikings win one, lose one to Douglas

It was a battle from the mound in
both games during the Far West
League baseball doubleheader Friday,
with Siuslaw hosting Douglas.
Michael Larson, a junior right-han-
der for the Viks, came close to throw-
ing a no-hitter in the opener after keep-
ing the Trojans off the bases for the
first five innings.
But in the bottom of the sixth, a pair
of hits brought relief pitcher senior
Kenneth Thrall to the mound with one
out.
From there, Thrall managed to get
Douglas to pop up for an easy out, then
ground out to eliminate the threat
