2 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, APRIL 16, 2016 Sheldon Meyer joins WLCF board of directors It was fortunate for new Western Lane Community Foundation (WLCF) board member Sheldon Meyer that his resume contains a long list of board-of-director experi- ence, as there was no time to waste with WLCF Community Grants season in full swing. Starting Jan. 1, Meyer acquired the WLCF board seat vacated by long-time board member Roger McCorkle, who had dedi- cated 12 years to the foun- dation. Meyer’s board experi- ence is varied and exten- sive; he served on Mental Health Association of Southwestern Oregon, Bay Area Transportation District in Coos Bay, South Western Community College and he is a past mayor and current board member of the research, writing experi- ence in counseling, psy- chology, gerontology, adult education and com- munications. He received his bache- lor of science degree from the University of Utah and his master’s degree and PHD from Oregon State University. It involved a lot of soul searching and group effort to arrive at what we as a group saw as the best solutions to the many requests,” he said. WLCF has nine volunteer board directors and a volunteer executive director. Directors can serve maximum of two consecutive three-year terms. Serving with Meyer is board President Cindy Forsythe, Vice President Tom Bassett, Secretary Pat Stewart, Treasurer Dee Osborne, as well as Jim Grano, Ray Mans, Nancy Walker and Lis Farm. Round up household hazardous waste today Lane County is holding a free hazardous waste roundup for households and will collect up to 35 gallons of hazardous waste per customer. Businesses, schools, church- es or nonprofit organizations are subject to disposal fees. In Florence, the round up will be Saturday, April 16, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Florence Transfer Site, 2820 N. Rhododendron Drive. All community members are welcome to participate in the roundup. What to bring: Paint, house- hold cleaners, lawn and garden chemicals, car care products, arts and crafts products, and other household hazardous waste. Check labels for words such as flammable, corrosive, poison, caution and danger. Don’t bring empty contain- ers, drums, radioactive waste, asbestos, electronics or explo- sives.Any empty containers can be safely thrown in the trash. For electronics recycling, the Florence transfer site will accept the following items for free during normal operating hours (maximum of seven items at a time): televisions, computer monitors, central pro- cessing units (CPUs) and lap- tops. The couple first met on July 17, 1955, at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro, Calif., on the offi- cial opening day of Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif.
