The annual event, now in its fourth year, plays host to athletes of all levels, including Olympic-level competition. Volunteers are still needed to help with this year’s event.
Dunes City gears up for annual triathlon, duathlon
Dunes City is busily plan-
ning its fourth annual Oregon
Dunes Triathlon and Duathlon
on Saturday, May 7.
The city’s signature event is
just a few weeks away, and
organizers are seeking volun-
teers to help staff the event.
Volunteers provide invalu-
T IDE T ABLE
able assistance to ensure that
the races and venues run
smoothly and safely.
Volunteers also play a vital
support role for all of the par-
ticipating athletes by providing
encouragement and hospitality;
many athletes have returned to
the Tri/Du each year because
they appreciate the event’s
enthusiastic volunteers.
The commitment is for half a
day and all volunteers will
receive a free T-shirt.
This year, volunteers’ names
will also be entered into a
drawing for gift certificates and
prizes donated by local spon-
V IKINGS
sors. The drawing will be held
after the event and winners will
be notified.
Again this year, Dunes City
will award a $250 donation to
the organization that provides
the most volunteers.
The organization can be a
civic club, athletic club, home-
BLOCKED BY
owners association or similar
type of group.
Be sure to include your orga-
nization’s name when register-
ing to volunteer. If your group
has the most volunteers present
on race day, your group will be
rewarded with a $250 check.
Volunteers
are
needed
between about 6 a.m. and 1
p.m. on race day, Saturday,
May 7.
Anyone with a few hours to
spare who wants to be part of
this fun and exciting event can
call Dunes City Hall at 541-
997-3338 to register as a volun-
teer.

Though Siuslaw’s home softball game was canceled
due to heavy rains, the Viking baseball team was well
ahead of the weather Tuesday when they faced the
Bruins in Brookings-Harbor. Unfortunately, the weather
was the only thing the Vikings were able to stay ahead
of during a low-scoring 3-0 shutout by the Bruins.
The Vikings sent Mapleton freshman left-hander
Gabe Simington to the mound, where he pitched a com-
plete game in his first start of the season. Simington
walked three batters and struck out nine, but the Bruins’
six hits managed to keep them ahead of the Vikings, who
claimed five hits — including two from senior shortstop
Kenneth Thrall.
In the top of the first inning, Siuslaw stranded three
runners after back-to-back strikeouts with the bases
loaded. The Vikings eventually left a total of nine run-
ners on base by the seventh inning.
After holding the Viks scoreless for the first two
innings, Brookings managed to score one run in the bot-
tom of the third when, with one out, the Bruins singled,
then doubled before bringing home the run on a sacrifice
deep to center field. Brookings then scored two runs in
the bottom of the fifth, on an RBI single and an error.
Tuesday, the Vikings will be home to host North
Bend, beginning at 5 p.m.

It was a day of personal bests for
three Viking tracksters competing at
Prefontaine Track in Coos Bay last
Tuesday. Siuslaw was among five Far
West League teams competing at the
meet, with only Douglas out of the line-
up.
Juniors Carissa Oliver and Destinie
Tatum each had personal bests and wins
for the day, beginning with Oliver, who
threw the shot put 35 feet, 3 inches for
a personal record and first place.
