Heading into last Friday’s
Far West League opener, a
doubleheader on the road at
defending district champion
Marshfield, Viking coach
Sean O’Mara knew the
Pirates were going to be the
team to beat this season.
“We’ll be facing our
toughest opponent early, on
the road,” O’Mara said
before Friday’s matchup.
“I’m actually kind of glad
we’re getting that one over
right away.”
Against Pirates lead pitch-
er Mackenzie Johnson, the
Vikings struck out 18 times
in the doubleheader, includ-
ing 12 strikeouts in the open-
er. In the nightcap, six batters
went down in five innings of
play, in a game called early
due to the mercy rule, 17-1.

The Vikings opened the Far West
League season Friday by squaring off
at home in a doubleheader against
Marshfield, with junior pitcher
Michael Larson leading from the
mound in the opener.
Larson, a junior right-hander, threw
79 pitches in four innings before
FWL
handing the mound over to senior
shortstop Kenneth Thrall, who inher-
ited a comfortable 8-1 lead to close
with.
Still, it was anything but an easy
win for the Vikings, who avoided a
few shots across the bow from the
Pirates, who loaded the base in both
the second and fourth innings, and
also had runners poised to score in the
third inning.
Larson ended the threat in the sec-
ond and third innings with strikeouts,
then managed to illicit a weak flyout
OPENER
to end the threat with bases loaded in
the fourth inning before Thrall came
in to close.
The senior hurler went to work
striking out five batters over the next
three scoreless innings.
At the plate, sophomore Jared
Brandt was the piston driving the
Viks’ offensive machine, smacking a
double to bring in three of Siuslaw’s
five runs in the second inning, then
holding out for a walk to score
