Q. When is the next Hazardous
Waste pick-up in Florence?
A. Just in time for spring cleaning!
Twice each year, Lane County Public
Works hosts this convenient, free dis-
posal option here in Florence. County
Transfer and Recycling, Siuslaw
Valley Fire and Rescue, the City of
Florence and Lane County Master
Recyclers donate equipment, disposal
costs, staff and volunteer time to
make this Household Hazardous
Waste (HHW) Roundup happen.
The spring event is this weekend,
Friday, April 15, from noon to 5 p.m.,
and Saturday, April 16, from 8 a.m. to
2 p.m.
Staff from the county’s year-round
hazardous waste Collection Center in
Glenwood will be at the Florence
Transfer Station, 2820 Rhododendron
Drive, to accept the following items:
household cleaners, lawn and garden
chemicals, car care products, arts and
craft supplies, fluorescent lamps over
4 feet long, fuel, solvents and poisons.
They ask that you leave materials
in the original containers; it helps staff
know how to store and dispose of
them safely.
Items not accepted at the event
include: any container over 5 gallons,
asbestos, radioactive waste or explo-
sives. Don’t bring your empty con-
tainers, either — they can just be
recycled, if applicable, or thrown in
the trash.
Businesses that generate small
amounts of hazardous waste may be
able to take advantage of this event in
Florence also. They will need to pre-
register and will pay a fee for the dis-
posal; call 541-682-4120 for details.
In case you are unaware: oil,
antifreeze, batteries, and sharps (nee-
dles) are accepted year round at the
Transfer Station. Fluorescent lamps
that are 4 feet or less in length can be
recycled year round at Florence True
Value, 1750 Highway 126.
In addition, the Habitat ReStore,
2016 Highway 101, offers recycling
for architectural paint, stain, primer,
sealers, lacquers and varnishes year
round as part of the PaintCare pro-
gram.
Visit the city’s website at
www.ci.florence.or.us and search for
Hazardous Waste, or call 541-997-
8237 for more information.
If you like to plan ahead, the fall
HHW event is generally the second
weekend in October.
Q. I have old tax records I need to
get rid of. Where should I take them?
A. Oregon Pacific Bank will hold
their annual Shred Day on Saturday,
April 16, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., or
until the truck is full. The truck will
be in the parking lot at the Bank, 1355
Highway 101, to accept confidential
paper materials for onsite shredding.
This event is free and open to
everyone in the Florence community.
Businesses may bring material during
the last hour of the event. This com-
munity service is staffed by bank
employee volunteers, family mem-
bers, and friends.
Contact Oregon Pacific Bank for
more information, 541-997-7121.
Q. Is there any place in Florence to
discard old medications, other than in
the trash or down the drain?
A. As of March 28, yes. The City
of Florence announced recently that
the prescription drug drop box is once
again available at the Florence Police
Department. The disposal drop box is
open to the public Monday through
Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the lobby
of the Florence Justice Center, 900
Greenwood St.
This is a great way to safely dis-
pose of outdated or unused prescrip-
tion and over the counter medica-
tions.
Due to the construction and small
size of the drop box, don’t combine
containers together in boxes or bags.
Please note, no liquid medications
and no sharps (used needles or
lances) are accepted.
This drop box is intended for use
by members of the public, not com-
mercial facilities.
By using this designated disposal
service, you will be helping to keep
waterways clean in our area. Contact
the Florence Police Department at
541-997-3515 with any questions, or
visit www.preventionlane.com.

Welch to host memoir-writing workshop at LCC Florence Center April 23
Award-winning columnist
Bob Welch will visit Florence
Saturday, April 23, for a one-

Lane’s Continuing Education

ideas into prose to publishing
one’s personal stories.
Prior writing experience isn’t
required.
“The workshop is designed
for people interested in telling
stories involving their lives,”
Welch said. “It’s aimed for
everyone from the ‘always
wanted to write, but don’t know
where to begin’ writer to the
person, who, seeing the ticking
clock, wants to have their mem-
oir book printed — and soon.”
As part of the workshop,
Welch will present 18 key ques-
tions memoirists should consid-
er when starting a project.
He’ll also show participants
how simple and inexpensive it
is to create a book. Short writ-
ing assignments designed to
jumpstart the creative process
and help writers define their
project goals are also part of the
workshop.
“The atmosphere will be
relaxed, fun and affirming,”
Welch said.
Welch is the author of 20
books and, though retired from
The Register-Guard, continues
to share his Oregon Life
columns with readers.
He offers his workshops to
writers across the country and
has served as an adjunct jour-
nalism faculty member at the
University of Oregon.
Workshop participants will
receive a copy of his book,
“Pebble in the Water,” his own
memoir of his four-year journey
to research, write, edit and mar-
ket, “American Nightingale.”
The book is the inspiring
account of the life of Frances
Slanger, a Jewish Polish immi-
grant who served as a U.S.
Army nurse in Normandy dur-
ing World War II.
Lunch and a classroom note-
book are also included in work-
shop cost.
