In 2014, Jacob Kirby was
one of 19 Siuslaw graduates to
receive a scholarship from
Western Lane Community
Foundation (WLCF).
Actually, Kirby received
two, the Dick and Barbara
Whitmore and Willard Meyers
scholarships.
Kirby is currently a sopho-
more at the University of
Portland with a major in elec-
trical engineering and a minor
in computer science. Within the
last two years at the University
of Portland, he said that among
his major successes have been
making his own Android apps
and real life circuits. With the
experience and knowledge that
he received through his classes,
he has been able to job shadow
at companies such as Garmin
and has an internship with a
company that tests Apple and
amazon products.
“The scholarships have
helped make all these achieve-
ments possible because it
helped me afford the university
that I’m going to,” said Kirby.
“The University of Portland is
a great school for engineers
and the scholarship money
allowed me to attend and take
part in a lot of different engi-
neering activities and clubs.”
Kirby is just one of the many
graduating seniors from both
Siuslaw and Mapleton High
Schools who are — and have
realized — their dreams and
potential over the last 42 years
that the foundation has given
out scholarships.
The WLCF Scholarship
application deadline for 2016
graduating seniors is Friday,
April 15. WLCF administers
15 scholarship funds, most of
which are awarded annually
and range from $500 to $2,500
each. The funds represent
yearly earnings from funds
WLCF manages on behalf of
generous donors of our local
community.
Applications
can
be
obtained at the High School
Counseling offices or on line at
www.wlcfonline.org and must
be post marked or received no
later than April 15 at P.O. Box
1589, Florence, OR. 97439, or
submitted to the web address
above by the same date.
The opportunity to help
graduating seniors further their
educational goal is just a short
WLCF application away but
the opportunity is only there if
they apply.
Siuslaw Friendship Club to elect new officers
e Dairy Of Anne Frank
Presented by the Last Resort Players
Directed by Jennifer Conner and Cathy Dupont
e Diary of Anne Frank will warm your heart and strengthen your soul
as the Last Report Players cast bring to life the characters in Anne’s diary.
Written by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett and now newly adapted
is adaptation gives us a powerful new look into
rough Anne’s
diary we experience the honest historic changes during World War II for
the Jewish people. Her determination
to share her life in the pages of her diary
captures a maturity as she documents the
two dark years of living in a claustrophobic
environment with 7 others. Anne gives us
examples of fear, hope, grief and laughter
as they live each day not knowing what
tomorrow will bring. “Wendy Kesselman
nely textured new Diary of Anne Frank
tells a deeper story. A sensitive, stirring
and thoroughly engaging new adaptation.”

Spring Auto Tips:
Batteries, Plugs & Wires: Test and replace
old or weak batteries, plugs and wires,
especially those more than three years old.
It will certainly be cheaper than a tow and
