Danny was born Dec. 30, 1946, in Coos Bay, and spent his whole life living in Reedsport. While in the eighth grade at Pioneer School, he set the Pole Vault record, done with an aluminum pole, a record that still stands today. Shortly there- after, they changed to fiberglass poles. In high school, Danny played football and was a member of the class of 1966. He married Nancy Morris in 1968 and had two children, Keri and Jeff. Danny worked in the sawmill at International Paper Co. until the mill closed. He was also a deputy sheriff with Douglas County, and drove longhaul truck (mainly on the west coast). He had an associate degree in police science from Southwestern Oregon Community College. Danny’s greatest love and joy was spending time with his children. Danny also loved spending his time outdoors, including hunting, fishing and cutting wood. He also loved cooking; you could usually find him cooking at the Eagles and Moose Lodge, or for all his family and friends. He especially enjoyed doing banquets. His special was prime rib with homemade horseradish and various seafood dishes, but his most requested dish by everyone was his famous “armadillo eggs.” He started going across the bar at Winchester Bay at the age of 15 (his mother wasn’t happy about that when she found out). He would often share his catch with friends, family and neigh- bors. Danny had a huge heart and never met a stranger. Upon his discharge from the Navy in 1946, he returned to Portland, Ore., where he met his loving wife of 48 years, Agnes Mary Barry. They wed in her hometown of Lakeview, Ore., in 1950. Jack and Agnes knew they wanted to raise a large Catholic family and the Lord blessed them with nine children. Throughout his career, Jack provided for his family, work- ing as the manager of Midgley’s and Eugene Mirror and Glass. They had a beautifully chaotic household filled with faith and family love. After sharing nearly half a century of marriage together, Agnes passed away in 1998. Jack moved to Florence to seek healing and solace from the beauty of the ocean. He met Geraldine Stoeckl, and they married in December of 2001. They enjoyed many years living in Florence until health problems required Jack to move to Eugene. Jack was a respected member of Alcoholics Anonymous for almost 50 years. AA was a sub- stantial part of his life and he sponsored many new members over the years whom he consid- ered to be like sons. A sincere thank you to Pat Maher, Judy Matthews and his grandson, Mark Conklin, for bringing Holy Communion to him during his illness. Also, a sincere thank you to the care- givers at Reynold’s Adult Foster Care.
