Volunteers sought for Band concert will benefit Habitat for Humanity
‘Day of Caring’
United Way of South-
western Oregon, partnering
with Northwest Natural, is
seeking local service clubs and
individuals interested in vol-
unteering to help Bay Area
seniors and the disabled during
this year’s eighth annual Day
of Caring.
Last year, United Way of
Southwestern Oregon had
more clients than years past
and expect the same response
this year.
The Day of Caring is
Saturday, April 23, and will
involve local volunteers visit-
ing the homes of seniors and
people with disabilities to
stack wood, mow lawns, clean
The Pacific Coast Wind
Ensemble (PCWE) will be pre-
senting a concert Sunday, April
3, at the Performing Arts
Center in Newport beginning at
2 p.m.
The concert will be a benefit
for the Lincoln County Habitat
for Humanity.
Led by director Lou
Invernon, the program will
consist of classics — Bach’s
“Little Fugue in G-Minor,”
show tunes from “Chicago,”
medleys from Louis Armstrong
and Gershwin, as well as tan-
gos, overtures, beguines and
more.
The Wind Ensemble is com-
posed of amateur and profes-
sional musicians from along
Oregon’s central coast, from
Lincoln City to Florence, that
perform three seasonal con-
certs given in Yachats,
Newport and Florence.
Each concert benefits a local
charity, this one is for Habitat
for Humanity of Lincoln
County.
Besides local charities, the
Wind Ensemble has a commit-
ment to the development of
young musicians through its
scholarship program.
As many band members
know, music is a life-long avo-
cation, giving pleasure through
the years, and a sound educa-
tion in the early years provides
gutters, haul trash and do other
manual labor jobs seniors and
the disabled can’t do for them-
selves.
Last year, more than 180
volunteers worked at 74
homes in Coos Bay and North
Bend. The activity begins at 9
a.m. and jobs are finished by
early afternoon.
Projects are matched with
volunteer group capabilities.
There will be an apprecia-
tion barbecue afterward, host-
ed by Northwest Natural Gas.
Anyone interested in help-
ing can contact United Way of
Southwestern Oregon at 541-
267-5202 or visit uwswo@
frontier.com.

WLCF announces scholarship deadline
Western Lane Community
Foundation (WLCF) has
announced that April 15 is the
deadline for submission of
scholarship applications for
seniors at Mapleton and
Siuslaw high schools.
WLCF administers 15
scholarship funds, most of
which are awarded annually
and range from $500 to $2,500
each. The funds represent year-
ly earnings from funds WLCF
manages on behalf of generous
donors of our local community.
Applications
can
be
obtained at the high school
counseling offices or on line at
www.wlcfonline.org and must
be post marked or received no
later than April 15 at PO Box
1589, Florence, OR, 97439 or
submitted to the web address
by the same date.
Scholarships are available
for traditional four-year col-
leges as well as community
colleges and accredited trade
schools.
While academic achieve-
ment is one criteria used in
determining recipients, the
scholarship committee also
carefully reviews outside activ-
ities, scholastic improvement,
volunteerism, economic need,
and work history.
Several of the scholarships
are directed toward students in
particular fields of education or
with other qualifying charac-
teristics such as mechanical
interest, nursing and others.
Last year, Western Lane
Community
Foundation
awarded over $25,000 in
scholarships.
Since WLCF established
their first scholarships more
than 40 years ago, more than
$250,000 has been awarded to
both Mapleton and Siuslaw
graduating seniors.
Watch
for
upcoming
announcements concerning a
specific LCC nursing scholar-
ship and our second annual
scholarships designed for
already graduated students, re-
entry students and other career
changing adults.

more
information
regarding the graduating senior
scholarships, contact school
counselors or the WLCF office
