A public meeting on recent
Fire Protection Assessment
additions in the Western Lane
District is Monday, March 28,
in Florence, at the Siuslaw
Valley Fire main station, 2625
Highway 101.
The Oregon Department of
Forestry’s (ODF) Western
Lane District will hold a town
hall meeting with State Sen.
Arnie Roblan, District 5, on
Fire Protection Assessments
for wildfire protection.
ODF will explain the
assessment process to atten-
dees and answer questions.
The department recently
reviewed the existing Forest
Patrol Assessments in the area
around Florence and deter-
mined that 700 additional lots
meet the definition of forest-
land for the purpose of wild-
fire protection.
The last review in the area
was conducted more than a
decade ago. The assessments
are part of the funding struc-
ture for the wildland fire pro-
tection the agency provides.
Accuracy of these assess-
ment rolls is maintained by
completing a periodic review
of a portion of the district each
year.
ODF sent letters to the resi-
dents informing them that their
properties would now be
assessed. Whenever tax lots
are added to the Forest Patrol
Assessment, the total revenue
received by the department
does not increase.
Rather, the assessment paid
by each landowner is more
equitably distributed among
those receiving wildland fire
protection.
In addition to Sen. Roblan,
Rep.
Caddy
McKeown,
District 9, and Lane County
Commissioner Jay Bozievich
are likely to attend the town
hall meeting to answer ques-
tions.
While this meeting is spe-
cific to questions for the ODF
representatives, Sen. Roblan
encouraged constituents to
attend and give him a sense of
what is on the minds of resi-
dents in and around Senate
District 5.

as elections near
If you plan to vote for your
favorite candidate in the 2016
Presidential Primary Election
on Tuesday, May 17, you must
be registered to vote by
Tuesday, April 26.
The election will include
voting for Lane County Justice
of the Peace, Lane County
Sheriff and several county
measures.

The Florence Area Radio
Control Aircraft Association
created special rigging to hang
model aircraft as part of the
decorations.
Rotarian volunteers decorat-
ed for the event, sought out
contributions, set up, tore
down and ran the auction,
including packaging auction
items and ringing up totals.
Six cashiers processed
$83,000 in 52 minutes.

live auction. Rotary Interact
students from Siuslaw High
School and the senior mem-
bers of the 2016
Rhododendron Court also vol-
unteered.

such as regional transporta-
tion, an all-ages community
center, housing and high-
speed fiber optics.”
The final vision action team
meeting is Tuesday, April 5,
when the team will conduct a
final review. At that time the
team will also turn the project
over to the individual vision
keeper volunteers who will
each be responsible for moving
a specific project forward.
Grant funding for a part-time
project coordinator will also be
explored.
Funding for the project has
been provided by the Ford
Family Foundation, the City
of Florence, Siuslaw Public
Library and the Rotary Club
of Florernce.
The final vision document
is posted on the Siuslaw
Pathways

Ballots will be mailed and
official drop sites will be open
on Friday, April 29.

The Siuslaw Interact Club and Key Club took time out of their busy schedules to work
together on stuffing Easter eggs for today’s Community Easter Egg Hunt at Miller Park.
Both clubs are high school age community service clubs that give to the community in
a variety of ways. Key Club is sponsored by the Florence Kiwanis Club and Interact is
sponsored by The Rotary Club of Florence.

The live auction, with long-
time father-son auctioneers
Blair and Bob Sneddon, raised
$64,000.
Rotary President Crystal
Farnsworth, who emceed the
event, said, “It takes a lot of
work to transform this room
into what you saw and what
you see at every Rotary
Auction. ... The team effort is
what makes the magic hap-
pen.”
Erickson added, “I think it
was an amazing and very suc-
cessful event. Everyone had a
great time.”
