WLCF received 56 applica-
tions requesting over $176,000
in funds.
This year’s grants covered a
wide range of projects, includ-
ing partnering with the Central
Oregon Coast Amateur Radio
Club as it establishes an emer-
gency field deployable com-
munications trailer; both
Mapleton and Siuslaw School
districts, which are benefiting
by several projects funded to
enhance the students educa-
tional curriculum that are not
covered with regular school
district funding, such as one-
on-one computers and online
academic subscriptions; both
Mapleton and Siuslaw elemen-
tary, which will use the grants
to receive library books; and at
the district, a grant to replace
the audiometer for conducting
hearing evaluations.
The arts were represented as
well, including SEAcoast
Entertainment’s
“Living
Voices Educational Theater”
Project, and FloTones music
library upgrade.
Florence and Mapleton
Food Share received funds to
help maintain and upgrade
their equipment vital to serv-
ing the needy.
The Rotary Club of
Florence established the
Western Lane Community
Foundation in 1974 as a com-
munity trust, a private non-
profit organization to attract,
administer and distribute pri-
vate charitable resources for
the benefit of residents in
western Lane County.
Through these resources the
Foundation helps sustain and
enhance the quality of life in
western Lane County by sup-
porting non-profit organiza-
tions operating in all fields of
interest.
The Foundation manages
current assets of $5,000,000,
which consist of Designated
Funds; assets that are estab-
lished by donors to support
certain organizations, Field of
Interest Funds; donors who set
a criteria of a particular area of
community service that they
want the grant distributed to,
and general funds; which are
flexible resources the founda-
tion can apply to address
changing community needs.

Caregiver receives Tomorrow’s Leader award
Each year at the Catholic
Health Assembly, the Catholic
Health Association (CHA) of
the United States offers four
awards that recognize remark-
able contributions to Catholic
health care. This year, a
PeaceHealth caregiver has
been chosen by the Catholic
Health Association’s Awards
Committee
as
one
of
Tomorrow’s Leaders for the
health ministry — a recogni-
tion program to honor young
people who will guide the
health ministry in the future.
William “Chip” Scott, RN
in the emergency department
at PeaceHealth Peace Harbor
Medical Center, was one of 10
outstanding young leaders
recognized for 2016.
His department manager,
Jan Finley, nominated him for
this recognition.
Chip has been with
PeaceHealth Peace Harbor for
almost 14 years.
“Chip’s knowledge, even as
a relatively new graduate
when I first met him, was
impressive, and has only
grown over the past seven
years I have worked with
him,” said Dr. William Foster,
Medical Director for the
Emergency Department. “His
calmness in even the most
stressful situations is much
appreciated by all he works
with. When there is a critical
patient in the ED, I am always
glad when Chip is my nurse.”
“Chip is a natural leader,”
Finley said. “This is evi-
denced by his fellow staff
members nominating him as
both the ED Council Chair
and the House Council Chair,
his ability to remain calm and
focused during an emergency
and his passion for improving
processes related to patient
care and safety.”
Scott always finds a way to
connect
with
patients,
coworkers and his community.
He and his family regularly
donate and volunteer with a
local church to provide food,

clothing and shelter for the
homeless in Florence. These
contributions are outside of
his work or job role but clear-
ly relate both to the
PeaceHealth Mission and his
commitment to his communi-
ty.
As one of Tomorrow’s
Leaders, he will be the guest
of CHA at the 2016 Catholic
Health Assembly in Orlando,
Fla., this June, where he will
be recognized during the
annual Awards Banquet.
In addition, he will be
attending an exclusive leader-
ship formation retreat, which
brings him face to face with
several senior executives from
across Catholic health care.
CHA pays for all travel and
expenses for the honorees to
attend the assembly and the
formation retreat.
The Catholic health min-
istry of tomorrow will depend
on strong leadership and pas-
sionate commitment to the
healing mission.
